About this project

The Caldarian Conflict

Since this book was published, it's sold thousands of copies and been featured for over six months in sixty Dunn Bros Coffee stores.

Mike at Dunn Bros

This story follows a monk named Mendell as he discovers that a military leader, Admiral Cain, is luring pirate ships to decoy merchant vessels stuffed with explosives instead of treasure.

There are only two problems: if the peasants find out how the military is doing this, they'll revolt. If the King finds out, he’ll have Cain’s head. Accordingly, anyone with too much knowledge must die.

Mendell soon finds himself pursued by Admiral Cain's merciless assistant, Krell, who suspects that the monk might ruin their ambitious plan and uncover their mysterious backer--and will gladly kill the monk to keep him silent.

Mendell must unravel the mystery before he, too, becomes a casualty of The Caldarian Conflict.

Why an Audiobook?

It's always been my dream to produce an audiobook for The Caldarian Conflict. I've talked with a few audiobook companies in the past, but hadn't found someone I trusted to put the right amount of dedication into my book.

In March, that changed.

Common Mode, an audiobook production company with over 30 years of experience, contacted me due to a significant interest in producing an audiobook version of The Caldarian Conflict. This company is pretty awesome--they've worked with former Presidents, celebrities, and hundreds of other authors. The company president, Paul Fowlie, is dedicated to helping me create a high-quality product that people will love.

With Common Mode's help, we've already gone through the audition process. After careful analysis, I've selected Kaleo Griffith. Listen to this sample:

I'm getting goosebumps. I can already feel the energy rising--this is going to be cool.

And that's why I need you.

To hire the top talent, it costs money. A lot of money.

The base amount here covers the cost of hiring a professional narrator, recording the audiobook, and processing it through a professional post-production process. Once I've received the finished product, I can begin distributing the MP3 and move into producing the CDs and performing some additional marketing.

I also hope to provide a free podcast where I stream one chapter a week, allowing people to purchase the full book if they can't wait for the next installment.

Thanks for reading, and for your support.

Who is Mike Kalmbach?

Mike wears many hats: father, author, freelance editor, entrepreneur, and a software engineer writing software to help with genetics research. He grew up in a forest near Lake Michigan. Spending his summers chasing wizards and battling evil ogres, Mike has always had a creative mind. He'll often share stories from his past, and some of them are even true.

After time dragged him from childhood, Mike moved into freelance editing, helping other authors improve dozens of stories. He leads the Rochester MN Writing group and often speaks on topics from writing and editing to engineering and robotics.

Luckily, Mike now has two sons, so he has plenty of excuses to set down the pen and play. He lives in Minnesota where he, his family, and a band of pirates can still be found battling ogres, dust bunnies, and even the occasional dragon.

Risks and challenges

Producing an audiobook from an already-complete manuscript has minimal risks. Other than some possible delays in schedule, I don't foresee many issues in this project.

The production timeline will take approximately six weeks starting from the end of this campaign. I've set the estimated delivery dates for the audiobooks three months out to allow plenty of time for mishaps, but should be able to deliver early. All of the ebooks and paperbacks are currently available, so I can fulfill those rewards immediately.

Any updates or delays will be communicated as soon as possible to our backers. Thanks in advance for your understanding!
