About this project
The master of light - better video, better pictures and a lot of fun
We designed the Kick to help you take better pictures, make better videos and have fun doing it.
We think this is the new generation of lights for photo and video, and you can control it from your iPhone!

Have fun with video
Kick excels at animated light. Pick one of the cool built-in effects like Rainbow, Strobe, or Mood. Or, something more dramatic like Fire, Lightning Storm and Cannon shots. It is all there and more...
With the Kick and the Kick App you can also sample light effects from any video stored on your iPhone. Or simply sample light straight from the iPhone camera, while you use it. Just point the iPhone towards the light effect you want the Kick to recreate, tap the screen - and the Kick will emit that light! It's automatically stored in the effects library for use later on. If you haven't already watched the video at the top of this page, you should do it now. The video demos some cool effects.
Simple light for photo or video
At it's most basic the Kick can emit straight white light, when you just need a little extra light. Then it allows you to adjust the color temperature – how warm or cold the light looks. A little warmth can do wonders for skin tones as the image below demonstrates
In addition to white, you have access to all the colors of the rainbow and any color in between. Via the App's color picker you choose the color you want and the Kick will emit the light instantly. You can even create animated colors from static images by swiping your finger across the image and the app will record that as a stream and send it to the light... recreate the effect of clouds rolling across a summer sky by dragging your finger across a yellow & dark grey image!
Works with your iPhone ...
The free Kick App gives you full control over the Kick. Change color and brightness, run any of the built-in light effects and take pictures or record video. All from within the same app.
... or any other camera device
Just to be clear: you can use the Kick with any camera – it is not only for smartphones. If you prefer to use your DSLR or compact camera, you can use the Kick standalone – as an independent light source with amazing creative features. Your iPhone then works as a remote control for one or more Kick lights.
Sampling of light and effects
With the Kick and the App you can create your own light effects by sampling light from any video, or directly from the iPhone camera itself – even while you are using it.
This is how it works: From within the App you can open and run any video. Move the cursor over the light effect you want to sample and it will stream it directly to the Kick. Thus, you can recreate candle flicker without lighting any candles, simulate the glow from a television screen without one to hand. The possibilities are endless.
Would you like the Kick to enhance the natural light, or light up your subject from a different angle? Kick can stream light directly from your iPhone camera, while you use it. Just point your camera and tap the screen. And the Kick will emit that light.
It is like sampling audio, except you sample light! The ability to capture a stream of light from a video or create a stream from a picture has us really excited. We can't wait to see the creative uses people put it to.
Take it everywhere
The Kick is small, about the size of an iPhone. It does not weigh much either. Kick is easy to take along, and you will always have a bit of extra light handy.
Where are we at?
The Kick is a real working prototype. Over the last 2.5 years we have developed, refined, miniaturized, and then developed, refined, and miniaturized some more. And then some. I believe we are at the 6th iteration. What started out as a professional effects light has been shrunk in size and in cost – but not so much in features – to an awesome pocket-sized light with a lot of built-in features.
We are about ready to enter into manufacturing, but we need your help to fund production tooling and volume component orders. The only way to make the Kick a reality at this price is to manufacture it in volume.
What is the difference between the Kick Basic and the Kick Plus?
The full version of the Kick – Kick Plus – has everything: built-in WiFi, white and colored light, built-in effects, and you can control it from your iPhone using the Kick App.
The Kick Basic is the little brother of Kick Plus and it is great for people who just want a small and simple portable white light. It does not have WiFi, but you can adjust brightness and color temperature with buttons on the device. With Kick Basic you don't get colored light, or animated effects, and since there is no WiFi, it can't be controlled from the iPhone app.
$99 Kick Basic. Basic version without WiFi.
$139 Kick Plus EARLY BIRD. Full version: WiFi, iPhone app, the works.
$149 Kick Plus. Full version: WiFi, iPhone app, the works.
$180 Two Kick Basic
$280 Two Kick Plus. Full version
$4300 Fifty Kick Basic
$6500 Fifty Kick Plus. Full version
(After Kickstarter the Kick Basic will retail for $129 or more and the Kick Plus for $179 or more)Developers
If you are a developer and you want to control the Kick from any app or device with WiFi access, you can get access to the Kick API from our website. The API will be avaible when we get closer to shipping. (You won't be able to do much with the API until you have a Kick to connect to.)
That depends on how you use it. In normal use it will typically last 4–5 hours or more. If you turn it to max power and leave it on, the battery will last about 1.5 hours.
No. But the battery is easily replaceable and spare batteries can be purchased form our website.
You plug it into any USB charger. Your iPhone charger for example, will work perfectly. How long it takes to charge the battery depends on the charger. If you use your iPhone charger, it will take about 1.5 hours to charge up an empty battery.
Yes. The Kick has a standard 1/4-20 tripod mount.
Yes. You can control multiple Kick lights from the iPhone app. The practical implementation of support for multiple lights is still in development at the launch of the Kickstarter campaign. Expect updates and more details on this functionality.
We have not developed apps for other than iOS. That may change in the future, but right now, the iPhone is where it’s at.
Technically you can control the Kick from anything that has a WiFi connection. It is a matter of setting up communication and sending and receiving commands. If you are a developer you can control the Kick from a PC, Mac, Android, an Arduino with a WiFi shield, etc. The Kick has an API for this.
You add shipping cost to the amount you pledge. E.g. if you have selected a Kick Plus and you require international shipping, you enter $164 as the pledge amount ($149 + $15).
If you already pledged and forgot to add shipping, you can adjust your pledge by clicking on the blue "Manage my pledge" button before the project ends on July 18.
