So you just got hired as a janitor at a mysterious research laboratory deep in the mountains where you stumbled upon an Experimental Xenomorphic Entity with an attitude. And wouldn't you know it, the darn thing decided to kidnap you because apparently, it needs a host body to escape its creators. Now, the company that hired you to clean up toilets has sent its entire fleet of aerial fighters (which it has, by the way) to kill you. Typical Monday...
Sell it to me straight
NEOWING E.X.E. is an exciting free-to-play top-down space shooter (shmup) for Android and iOS. The game combines the retro style fun of a classic shmup with distance-progression style game play found in games such as Super Toss the Turtle (in which the goal is to gradually improve yourself to travel farther).
In Neowing E.X.E., you control the powerful space ship named E.X.E. (or does it control you?) Don't worry about piloting. You're just a janitor after all and E.X.E. has trust issues. Instead of frantically slapping your expensive phone to move E.X.E. around, all you need to worry about is dodging obstacles and blasting enemies that get in E.X.E.'s (and your) way. And while you're at it, you might as well collect their souls...
It feels like a very odd thing to do, but E.X.E. seems OK with it... in fact, E.X.E. is a little bit too OK with it. On second thought, you didn't happen to burn any bridges at your last job, did you? Flipping burgers seems strangely therapeutic compared to this.
There's no time for fond memories of scalding yourself over the fryer, though; if you want to escape with all of your extremities, you better use those souls to power up E.X.E. so he can get you safely away from your new (ex) employer.
Tell me how to play this thing
E.X.E. will pilot itself while you, the player, focus on blasting B.A.D.s (Battle Assault Drones) and dodging obstacles.
When enemies are defeated, collect their souls (only 140 calories each!).
Use souls to:
- Increase E.X.E.’s defense, power, and speed (or D.P.S.)
- Unlock new weapons and abilities
- Raise your own army of the dead to fight for you!
As E.X.E.’s stats increase, it will evolve into new, more powerful forms. Unique forms are unlocked as you increase specific stats:
- Defense - E.X.E will be tougher to kill but won't be as fast or strong.
- Power - E.X.E. will be able to destroy enemies more easily, but will die quicker and will take longer to reach the end of the stage.
- Speed - E.X.E. will be able to reach the end of the stage really fast, and can use speed bursts to cut through clusters of enemies... if it can survive that long.
As you fly through each stage, you will face-off against a terribly strong B.O.S.S. (Battle Operating Strategy Symbiote) - E.X.E.'s more advanced siblings who will stop at nothing to eliminate you!
The following screen shots are a proof of concept and do not represent the final version of the game.
Who's making this thing?
- Jon is the lead designer, finance manager, and project manager. He has a degree in game design.
- Jovan is the resource and development coordinator. He has a degree in Hot Pockets.
- Matt is the marketing and community manager. He has +5 to persuasion.
- Jessica is the recruiting and social media manager. She has ponies. I mean like, so many.
- E.X.E. is… I’m not sure what it does, actually. It has many degrees of sass.
And, exactly where does my money go?
Money will be allocated towards:
- Gummy bears for the Android programming monkeys
- Whips to motivate the music composer
- Chains to keep our artists from escaping
- The gov’ment (curse you, taxes)
- More Hot Pockets (why are you so good)
I've got some more questions...
We wanted to start small (ba-dum-tsh). Our primary goal is to deliver a fun gaming experience that can be enjoyed anywhere. At home, on the bus, in the airport, or while running the clock at the office.
Will this game be pay-to-win (translation: overburdened with micro-transactions)?
If Capcom's Mega Man series had micro-transactions back in the 80s, many controllers would not have needlessly lost their lives. Micro-transactions will be available for those who would like to take advantage of it, but you will be able to successfully complete the game without spending any money (and without the game harassing you every five minutes about it).
Will this game have annoying timers or cool-downs on gameplay?
No. The game will not utilize any function that restricts your ability to play such as a timer or cool-down. You will not be forced to spend money to continue playing.
Will there be obnoxious ads?
Remember when games used to be games and not just shells to hock other products? Neowing E.X.E. remembers. *cue casual rocking in chair*
Neowing E.X.E. will feature ads in-game but will align with a player-friendly watch-for-incentives model, where players are invited to watch an ad in exchange for an in-game reward (such as souls).
Prompts to watch ads will be unobtrusive and will not interrupt gameplay, only appearing in between missions.
What language/engine is this game being made in?
If I said Unity would you run away screaming? No, wait! Please, come back - gods, no, I didn't mean it! Please!! You don't know the power of the Unity side of development. It calls to developers like a siren calling to lonely sailors, promising easy development tools with fast results. And at the end of the day, don't we all just want something fast and easy that gives results? (giggity)
The game is only in preliminary development and we are still determining which tool or language will best allow us to deliver on both Android and iOS. We're looking at Unity but also a few others such as GameMaker and Corona.

Risks and challenges
Well, we might not get funded; the sun might explode; we could get hit by a hurricane; the programmers might revolt; the artist might blow it all on drugs; the game might su-... be too incredible to play. The possibilities are endless.
There's risk in everything, including laying down your hard earned cash. I think we're all still hurting from Mighty No. 9. But like Scar said to the hyena hordes as he plotted to kill Mufasa, "Stick with me, and you'll never go hungry again!"
Then again... they technically did go hungry, after he somehow did such a terrible job as king that the Pridelands literally withered and died. Guess that's not the best example.
We have a strong team with proven track records in a wide variety of fields, including project management, accounting, game design, and creating contracts. We feel this will help ensure this project successfully delivers on its promises.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
