Can you imagine spending years in prison, without knowing why youʼre there, and with no sense of when you will ever get out? Most Canadians wouldn’t think these are questions we would ever need to ask here at home, but the reality is we do.
The subjects of our film are known as ‘The Secret Trial 5.’ They are called that because after spending nearly 30 years combined in Canadian prisons under a little-known device called a security certificate, and enduring the strictest house arrest conditions in Canadian history, none of them has been charged with a crime or given access to the evidence against them. If you’re surprised to hear this, you’re not alone - it’s why we made the film.
After spending five long years working on a shoestring budget, we were so proud to premiere at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival this spring. We’ve been screening at film festivals here at home and around the world since, and to a great response.
Now, it’s time to bring this film to people across Canada.
What We’re Trying to Do
The majority of Canadians still don’t know about security certificates and their many shocking consequences. We want to change that.
Through a grassroots, cross-country screening tour, we want to bring The Secret Trial 5 to as many communities as possible, particularly those that wouldn’t otherwise have easy access to independent Canadian films. We’re going to start on the East Coast, and head West!
National security and human rights are once again a part of our national dialogue, and we feel the story of The Secret Trial 5 is more important than ever. We made this film for Canadians; now we need to bring it to them. A screening tour will help us reach people in communities big and small. It is an ideal way to encourage the fundamental conversations we’re having as a country right now - conversations about national security and individual freedom, immigration and refugee rights, and about government transparency.
We’ve already partnered with some amazing organizations and individuals across the country, but in order to make this tour a reality, we need your help.
How Your Donations Will be Used
All the money raised through Kickstarter will be used to fund this tour. From motel rooms to rental cars, to flyers, your money will help us put this film on screens, and bums in seats. The more money we raise, the more stops we can have. In other words, every dollar you contribute means more Canadians will see the film and learn about this important issue!
What You’ll Get
To show our appreciation for your support, we’ve got a raft of exciting rewards, ranging from digital high fives to copies of the film, to special guest appearances!
Other Ways To Help
Even if you can’t make a financial contribution, you can still help make this tour happen! You can help us raise awareness by connecting with us on Facebook and Twitter and sharing this campaign widely across your networks.
You can also partner with us for a stop. If you want to bring The Secret Trial 5 to your community, let us know! The more passionate and eager an audience we have, the more people we’ll be able to reach.

Risks and challenges
Many of you know about the challenges documentary filmmakers face in today’s climate. Distribution has always been hard for independent Canadian filmmakers. Getting a small film out across our vast country is difficult, but we know we can do it with your help.
