WE DID IT! THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!! NOW LET'S STRETCH!
Italiano is the story of four very colorful crime families who are locked in a war for control of Capitol City. The series will take you on a journey through the inner working of all four of these twisted families, but our main focus is on Mario Italiano.
Mario is the head of the East Coast and the series covers his battles as he attempts to seize control of the city. He will wage wars, strike alliances, and bring his form of justice to the streets. But as he makes his play for power he is apposed by many...
The first book explores the events that started this power struggle in motion. Mayor Buscillini is gearing up to take on the four families. Dastardly events are unfolding that will lead the families to war. Murder, mayhem, and meatballs will set the stage for an explosive 48 page monster of a debut issue!!
While creating and writing the series I was determined to contrast the graphic violence, dramatic plot points, and horrendously foul language of the mobster story line, with crude humor, weird characters, and a unique, in your face art style.
This creates an edgy yet cool feel to the series that often plays out like a dark comedy, and keeps it fresh and entertaining. Think of it as Goodfellas meets Rick and Morty, or Regular Show had a baby with GTA and that baby grew up to be a mobster.
The best part is that you don't have to be into comics to like this series!
How will the series unfold?
I'm big on art and action, I like large frames and long fight scenes. So I knew early on that this wasn't a 20 page monthly comic. In order to fit in all the story and not skimp out on the action pages, I just needed more pages!
So i'm going to unveil the series in 48 page trade paperbacks. This method will provide the most entertaining book while supplying the reader with a high quality more durable trade format.
At the moment I am a one man army, meaning that I create, write, script, storyboard, pencil, ink, color, letter, and master every page myself. So I know for sure that I can get two books done each year, and I will shoot for three.
On top of this I will be releasing other character art books, and back story to give you a bigger picture of the world of Capitol City as we move forward. This issue will be printed and ready to ship in September. Issue two will hopefully be ready to ship in December of this year.
I will also ship a 20+ page character art and backstory book called Italiano Case Files, as part of the Kickstarter tiers. I will continue to launch each issue through the Kickstarter platform so that I can offer it directly to you.
What's the art look like?
I've been hiding under a rock and building this world for over 15 years! The art style is what I'm most proud of. Bold, bright, and very clean, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Here are some example pages. Note: The profanity has been removed in the following examples for the purpose of this Kickstarter page only. Your copy will include multiple F- words, S- words, A- words, and many other colorful words that I can't use here.
Who created this incredible series?
Mike Bloom is a one man army of comic creating awesomeness! He creates, writes, pencils, inks, colors, and letters his series Italiano. Mike has been building the world of a Italiano for over 15 years, and with your help he is finally bringing it to life in print.
Mike has been creating characters and drawing comics for 30 years, working hard to tune his unique art style and presentation. Mike is extremely passionate about his work, and loves to entertain through his characters and stories.
When he's not creating something crazy, Mike likes to spend time with his wife of 15 years, his 2 rad kids, and his 2 English bulldogs. He also loves movies, toys, video games, and working out.
Where did this series come from/ My story
I was born to create characters and draw comics. I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. I was only 7 years old when I created my first comic using my own dudes! I was never the kid drawing my favorite super heroes, I never wanted to draw other peoples work, I did my own thing. See for me, creating characters is the best part, and it's where I shine.
What truly solidified my need to go my own way was the birth of Image Comics. I'll never forget putting down those Marvel books when my favorite artists stopped drawing them, only to find myself as a wide eyed kid, standing in like at the Chicago Comic con with my stack of creator owned Image #1's, waiting to have them signed by my heroes. I was so inspired!
It was only a matter of time until I finally created something that struck a nerve. As soon as I drew the first quick sketch of Mario Italiano in the break room of a spice shop, I knew I had something. Being part Italian, I love mobster movies, so I was really excited to go that direction with this character. After hashing out the idea, it didn't take long until I was pumping out crazy characters and developing four off the wall mob families. I was in heaven, and this stuff was really cool!
But like many things in life, my project was put on hold as I got married young, started a family, and got rooted into a career that was financially rewarding but far from my passion.
Four years ago I was diagnosed with a rare disorder that forced me to leave my job. At the time I was scared silly and thought my life was over. But everything happens for a reason, and I eventually ended up being offered a new position at the company that allowed me to work less hours and from home.
This was my chance! I took Italiano off the shelf and decided to build it into a card battle game that I eventually published on the iPhone. This was a great experience as it forced me to dive deep into creating the world of Capitol City, and to fully develop all these crazy characters.
Working on all the art and story for the game really inspired me to pick up the comic boards and do what I should have done over 15 years ago. So I started writing the full series and my passion was set a blaze!
This series has been a long time coming and I'm all jacked up to share it with you. After all these years, I have a ton of hilariously cool characters and crazy stories written. So strap in and let me take you on a journey through the world of Capitol City, as Mario Italiano takes on three insane rival families and a mayor hell bent on taking him down!
Thanks for reading
Risks and challenges
At this time and for the foreseeable future, I am doing this book all on my own.
So........How the hell am I going to get this done?
Currently I have the overall plot lines all hashed out for the entire series. I also have the first handful of issues scripted and ready to go. As far as the first issue that you are helping to Kickstart here on this page, it is written, penciled, inked and half colored. I only need to finish the colors, letter, and print this baby. So my timelines are very realistic. Once this issue goes to print, I'm hopping on the next issue to get ahead for next time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
