Choreographer's Canvas is a platform for emerging and established choreographers to showcase their work Off-Broadway to industry professionals and the general public. The concept of the Canvas stemmed from Twyla Tharp's book "The Creative Habit", where she writes:
"I walk into a large white room. It's a dance studio in midtown Manhattan. To some people, this empty room symbolizes something profound, mysterious, and terrifying: the task of starting with nothing and working your way toward creating something whole and beautiful and satisfying. It's no different for a writer rolling a fresh sheet of paper into this typewriter (or more likely firing up the blank screen on his computer), or a painter confronting a virginal canvas, a sculptor staring at a raw chunk of stone, a composer at the piano with his fingers hovering just above the keys. Some people find this moment - the moment before creativity begins - so painful that they simply cannot deal with it. They get up a walk away from the canvas."
Through annual submissions, a panel of dance professionals chooses 15 to 20 cutting-edge choreographers from around the world in all styles including tap, ballet, theatre dance, jazz, hip-hop, modern, lyrical, contemporary, aerial, ballroom, Middle Eastern, swing and more. For the past 6 years the Canvas has presented over 65 choreographers, giving performance opportunity to over 450 dancers to sold out shows! The choreographers participate in the Canvas free of charge and are provided with the performance venue, technical designers, as well as all of the marketing and promotional materials.
With this comes it’s challenges, but you can help! One of the most daunting tasks for this event is fundraising. Since 2008 the Canvas has been funded by The Group Theatre Too with marketing support from Broadway Dance Center, Capezio, Society of Stage Directors & Choreographers, and Manhattan Movement and Arts Center. Every year, we are tasked with obtaining the start-up capital to cover the theater rental, promotional materials, and technical requirements. Your support through Kickstarter is necessary to keep this incredible program growing and giving choreographers "a large white room" to create their next great piece of art.
Risks and challenges
One of the unique challenges of the Canvas is that it all takes place in one day! Fortunately we have a great team of organized leaders who run a tight ship. We are lucky that this project has been running for the past six years, so needless to say we have learned from our past experience. Also, with the correct funding, we can add more hands-on-deck to work backstage and behind the scenes making the experience optimal for the choreographers, dancers and audience members.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
