About

Outline

Dithrandir TCG is a detailed and complex scifi trading card game being built through the Unity engine. It utilizes both your deckbuilding skills but also a luck of the roll, as rolling a six-sided die for different actions is an enormous part of the game concept.

The game features 7 distinct races in the base set alone, 8 planets with multiple locations each, dozens of creatures, multiple starships and a broad array of equipment to use. The base set alone is planned to be opened with at least 200 cards, possibly more, with the ability to be able to make multiple deck types focusing on winning through different aspects of the game.

Plans are to release the game by late Spring, with alpha and beta access in the months prior. Further details on the game and the goals are below.

The Story

3038 A.D. - Humans have begun exploring space, searching for new life and minerals. Earlier encounters with beings known as the Valdeth, a race of psychic beings that resembled human myths of dragons and sea serpents, gave humans the ability for interstellar travel. Humans have expanded and met multiple other races within their own galaxy since then.

Within a nearby solar system, a planet was discovered that held no sentient life, but extensive amounts of mineral deposits instead that were similar to Earth's (now known at Terranis to the other races). There was another mineral that was not seen on Terranis, known as Dithrandir, therefore the planet was named after this mineral. Dithrandir had a unique quality, in that it emitted a non-lethal radiation that seemed to imbue other minerals, jewels in particular, with their own properties and turned them into power sources greater than had ever been seen. And so humans chose to colonize this planet, mining the gems and the Dithrandir to power various machines, including new starships that cut travel time between planets from several months to a mere few days.

3061 A.D. - A little more than two decades have passed since Dithrandir was colonized, the population of the planet at a few million. Miners, scientists and their families makeup the majority of those that live on the planet. The new jewel-powered starships are the staple of the galaxy now and more and more of the Dithrandir mineral seems to be found every day.

The people of the planet, however, have become increasingly paranoid of outsiders as the years went on. They began getting greedy, attempting to cut off trade with anyone not from their own world. They even called themselves Dithrans, stating that they were now a separate nation. Newborns on the planet were being born with a blue glow radiating from the hair on their bodies, a sign that they were saturated with radiation from the Dithrandir mineral as well.

Years continued to pass and the Dithrans had started cutting off communications with everyone, claiming they would eliminate anyone that attempted to enter the planet's proximity with a new weapon they designed. It was known as the Armageddus Star, a 'planet-killer' class weapon, created almost entirely out of the jewels and minerals found on the planet. This weapon caused their own demise as internal wars began on the planet for control of the mining facilities and finally for the weapon itself. It was triggered and sabotaged, tearing the planet up from the inside and causing it to explode. Only a handful of Dithrans managed to escape the calamity, now known as the Armageddus Incident, or A.I., entering the galaxy into a new age.

A.I. 116 - 116 years after the Incident, most of the galaxy is in chaos after the destruction of Dithrandir. Large masses of the planet flew across the galaxy, hitting other planets and either destroying them or causing devastation. Terranis itself was completely obliterated by one, now reduced to an unstable gravity field with shards of the planet flying wildly about within it. With many of these masses, came the Dithran radiation as well. When they struck a planet, the entire area around the impact zone even further was saturated in the radiation, which was now toxic to many lifeforms. Anything affected by the radiation would become a crazed beast and attack anything that was not their own kind, regardless of how passive they were prior. The galaxy has become a dark place to survive.

"We only have ourselves to blame. It's harsh and brutal and broken, but one still has to keep living somehow." ~Remni Strath, Captain of the Starburst

The Game

Dithrandir's base game type is a 2-player match. Each player has a 40 card minimum play deck, a Starship, and at least a 10 card Planet deck.

The cards themselves all have various different stats on it depending on the card type. There's Starship, Crew, Creature, Equipment, Action and Planet cards. Each of the types have their own subtype, which can vary their use even further. For instance Equipment cards come in 4 varieties, Standard Equipment (no stats, only abilities for Crew), Weapon Equipment (combat stats and abilities for Crew), Jewel Equipment (bonus stats and abilities for Weapons and Starships), and Upgrade Equipment (no stats, only abilities for Starships). Each of the card types has their own colors to attribute it to it's main type and then a subtitle to explain which subtype it is. Here are a couple examples below using a new template we've been working on.

Winning a standard Dithrandir game can be met by multiple goals. You can destroy your opponent's ship, wipe out their whole crew or make it to the end of the designated rounds with the most Chakra (currency). Focusing on winning by one of these goal types and using the various methods to do so will be what diversifies the many possible deck types that can be created.

Goals

The purpose of the Kickstarter is to get the ground running on the engine and to hire artists, programmers and designers for the heavy work. There will be over 200 pieces of artwork that will need to be made for the game. We have at least 3 artists on standby, including Cynthia Turner, who drew the concept design for the Dargon race below:

We're currently in process of finding a couple programmers to contract for the game design in Unity, as well as an IT team to assist with running a server so that we can keep all the game information serverside. We'll need a web designer for a brand new website dedicated to the game as well and the funds to host the site as well. An infrastructure will be needed also for the purchasing of booster packs, whether it's through in-game currency or real world money, and even planning on including a way to edit your deck outside of the game itself incase we're able to do cross platform play of some sort.

Any funding over the amount will go towards possible extra features, extra cards and artwork and if enough is given, an earlier port over other platforms.

The End Result

On release, we expect to include several game modes, including a Standard, Draft and Tournament mode. Players will be able to earn in-game currency through regular play and hitting certain goals, which can go towards purchasing more booster packs, new card backs and playmats, and the entry fee for some of the game modes. Booster packs will be sold at a premium with real world cash, planned between $2-3 a pack, each pack coming with 12 cards. Standard booster would come with 8 commons, 3 uncommons and 1 rare or cosmic quality card. The cost of the packs will be slightly higher with conversion using in-game currency.

The game will have an extensive deck building system that should be accessible both in-game and on the game website, as well as being able to purchase packs using the same method. You'll be able to sort through every card by type, name, ability and stats, then build and save as many decks as you can imagine. There will also be a card collection database system so you can look at the cards you don't own yet and may even be a bonus for completing a full set of cards. To assist in that, we'll have a trading system setup as well, where you can trade any amount of cards you wish with another player using a double confirm system to ensure you wont be scammed.

This is just the base of what will be in the works for the game in the long run. The more funding received, the more we can throw in.

Risks and challenges

Programming and Artwork are the two largest hurdles currently for the game. The game needs to look unique enough so that it is different from anything else out there. If the game is not funded fully, then a different approach may be taken, such as the game going physical rather than virtual and there will be delays in such a case.
