1964 - 2014: Capturing the first 50 years of KCAM Radio in Southcentral Alaska in this keepsake book of pictures and stories
KCAM signed on the air March 27, 1964, the day of the Good Friday Earthquake. Anchorage was devastated. Valdez was wiped off the map by a tsunami. The Glennallen area was reeling from the quake. Communication was almost non-existent in the aftermath, but the Civil Defense Authority contacted KCAM to see if our tower was stable and if we could go on the air. Since we had not yet received our documents allowing us to begin broadcasting we signed on under Emergency Orders. We communicated with locals, emergency workers and those escaping from the devastation caused by the quake and tsunami on the coast.
This book will commemorate 50 years of broadcasting, including stories and photos from listeners whose lives have been changed through the broadcasts of KCAM. Quotes from founder Vince Joy, listeners who survived the earthquake, and those who use it as a lifeline of communication to the outside world from their mining claims and hunting camps will all be captured in this 75-100 page 8.5"x11" hardcover keepsake album.
From a small shack on "Mission Hill" to state-of-the-art studios on the Glenn Highway, KCAM's legacy is that of community service and volunteer staff with a heart to reach the people of the Copper River Valley. We'll look back and the faces of those who shaped KCAM over the years, the events that have been covered, and the lives that have been changed.
The book will be made available to the public during our 50th anniversary celebration in April 2014.

We are excited to be at KCAM during this important milestone. We have put much of our lives into the broadcasts for many years. It excites us to be involved in commemorating 50 years of KCAM and Alaska history. We are working diligently to gather photos and stories and already have 50 pages worth of material. We are confident that we will have plenty more to fill out this exciting piece of history. We have a contract with a publisher to deliver the completed books to us by March 1, 2014. When mailing rewards, we will include tracking to ensure that all backers receive your gifts.
