It's time to print and release the next edition of the GOLD DIGGER GOLD BRICK COLOR SERIES (Gold Brick IV), which collects issues 26 through 50 of the Gold Digger color series. If you supported the first color Gold Brick, thank you very much (and we hope you support this campaign) but if you are new to the series you have to check this out.
Thanks for taking the time to review our project. If you're not familiar with us, we are Antarctic Press, a small, independent comic company started in 1984. My name is Joeming Dunn and during those 30 years we have published some of the greatest and best independent comics. I personally have collected comics of almost every type and genre since 1974. The comic industry has changed over the years so we have started this Kickstarter program to help introduce new projects from our talented group of creators.
Over the years, we have published a number of series. Prominent among these is Fred Perry's ingenious title, Gold Digger, which Fred describes as a mixture of Indiana Jones and Final Fantasy. The idea for Gold Digger was first conceived during Fred's tour of duty in the first Gulf War, and it debuted in Antarctic Press's anthology comic, Mangazine, in 1991. A four-issue miniseries followed in 1992, and a regular monthly black-and-white series followed starting in 1993. The current color series began in 1999 and has continued since then. It is the second-longest-running solo created title in the industry. In 2013, Fred was honored at Comic Con International in San Diego, where he received an Inkpot Award for his work on Gold Digger.
Last year we released the first Color Gold Brick as a Kickstarter. This featured the first 25 issues of the Color Gold Digger series. You can see the project in the link below.
We are now releasing the second Color Gold Brick which features issues 26 through 50 of the series. If you haven't seen or read Gold Digger, this is your chance to enjoy one of the best and longest running ongoing series in comics! You can read the whole series to date online at http://antarcticpresslibrary.com/ and see what you've been missing.
What are we going to do with the Kickstarter money?
Plain and simple, we're going to print and ship the Gold Digger Color Gold Brick.
The original Gold
Digger series started as a black-and-white title, and the first 50 issues were
compiled in Gold Bricks number 1 and 2. This is the second color Gold Brick,
and it contains the next 25 issues of the color series. The original printing
of this book is now long sold out.
To start with, the Color Gold Brick (Gold Brick IV) is over 450 pages in FULL COLOR. Printing the actual books is the biggest single expense. The first print run of a typical Gold Brick costs in excess of of $10,000 at a minimum, as most printers require a minimum run to make it cost-effective, and we are using Kickstarter to help assists us with those costs. If the amount seems high, you must remember that we are printing at least a thousand copies of a 450+ page book. Another cost is shipping: First we will have to ship the books from the printer to our offices, and then once we get them, send copies to all our supporters and distributors. Several thousand pounds of books represents a significant shipping cost.
So what do you get?
The brick is 6 x 9 inches and will contain issues 26 through 50 of the Gold Digger Color Series. You can see the covers to all 25 issues above.
Here are the rewards we are offering INCLUDING SOME EARLY BIRD OFFERINGS so please act fast.
ALL DUST JACKET ART IS NOT FINAL
We also decided to offer some Add-Ons!
Choose the pledge level of the highest-price item you would like. (E.g., if you want a hardcover, please choose the reward for the hardcover level.)
Increase your pledge level by the amount of the add-on you would like to add! For instance, if you pledged for the hardcover reward level and also want a print, just add that amount.)
After the Kickstarter campaign is over, we will contact you personally and then ask what you want for your extra contribution.
Here is what you can currently add by increasing your pledge. (Please note that Kickstarter rules state that we cannot sell you any more than ten of any one item.)
As many of you know we were sold out of Color Gold Bricks #1 and #2 which instigated these Kickstarter campaigns. The next two color bricks which reprint issues #51 through #75 (for Color Brick #3) and #76 through #100 (for Color Brick #4) are still available. So we decided to make a Kickstarter only ADD-ON offer where you can get both of these Bricks for a Kickstarter only price ($35 Each). Now both of these books are over 500 pages long (with Color Brick #4 over 600 pages).
The books are 7x10 which is slightly larger than the printing on Color Gold Brick #1 and #2 and they are ONLY available as softcovers (so NO hardcover upgrades). There are a limited number so if we sell out we will distribute them on a first order basis (refunds as appropriate). Sorry for the high overseas shipping cost. If you get all the books they are almost 8 POUNDS (almost 4 kilograms of books) which estimates to about $60-$80 in overseas shipping.
THESE ARE FIRST PRINTINGS OF THE BOOKS. NOT NEW PRINTINGS.
Note: This upgrade is only for hardcover, it does not include the sketch, signature or dust jacket
Note: This is will be a piece of Gold Digger original art on bristol board, it will be a random piece of artwork from the series.
Note: This will include the sketch and dust jacket.
We hope to print other sold-out Gold Bricks. As you know, this volume will reprint the second 25 issues of the color series, but there are over 200 issues of Gold Digger, and this printing of 450+ pages only covers about 10% of the entire run. Many of the early issues are the ones that are the most desperately out of print. Being a small, independent publisher, we are forced to try to keep our cost margins as narrow as possible, and the end result is many of our books sell out quickly and become unavailable. Hopefully, we can use Kickstarter to help us keep all of our books in print. This is especially important with Gold Digger, since new readers discover the comic every day. We hope to be able to include other items as push goals, which may include getting other Bricks out to you.
We appreciate you taking the time to look over this Kickstarter campaign, and we hope to earn your support. If we reach our goal we will attempt to do some great stretch goals.
AS PROMISED STRETCH GOALS
We know these are ambitious goals but thanks for looking.
Here are some preview pages of the first issue of 25 that will be in this volume (Gold Digger Color #26).
Risks and challenges
There are always risks inherent in any project. This project has very few risks; the book is already done, and all we just need to do is raise the funds, pay the printer, and get it made. Our biggest risk is that we won't get the funding, and then the book won't be made.
We have been printing and releasing books for close to 30 years, so we have a good relationship with our printer and do not anticipate any hiccups.
There is always the risk that we won't be able to get the books in on time due to a variety of factors, but again, we do not anticipate that sort of problem.
We believe in full disclosure and we will make sure to keep you all updated on the progress of the book and all the incentives.
We have COMPLETELY fulfilled and completed two other Kickstarters (including the Zombie Deck and Gold Brick III) and fulfilled 35% of our Last Zombie Kickstarter (we are just waiting for the books to arrive to fulfill the rest). The printer we are using for this project is the same one that we have dealt with for many years so we do not anticipate any printing issues.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
