Creating a 2015 daily calendar preceded by a daily comic-a-day e-mail to begin immediately. Start every day laughing...
I am launching a new single-panel cartoon series on December 23, 2013. The name of the comic is Lyon's Den and the concept is to make people laugh with a minimal commitment (single panel with only a brief comment or dialogue). No political or other agenda except humor - using a variety of subjects (human, animals, inanimate objects, etc.).
Will publish a 2015 daily calendar. With over 150 cartoons already drawn and ready to go, will initially launch the comic with a cartoon a day e-mail that will start upon conclusion of this project and last for one year. The long-term goal is to get Lyon's Den syndicated in newspapers and publish several years of calendars (along with digital distribution).
Several years ago, I started writing down ideas for comics. This year I decided to leave my job, and focus my efforts on creating the comic, Lyon's Den. I have already finished the first batch of 150 and have barely scratched the surface of my notes/ideas. This Kick Starter project will be the official launch of the cartoon... starting with the first e-mail on December 23.
How it Started...
In 2003, I was standing in a subway in Taiwan during the height of the SARS outbreak. I looked around me and everyone on the train was wearing surgical masks. I started laughing out loud as a thought popped into my head...
Over the next 10 years, my life went on as normal, except for one thing... wherever I went, whether conscious or not, cartoon ideas popped into my head and I wrote them down...
My parents took me, along with one of my sons, to Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park in Florida. While we were there, I met a possum and learned the origin of "playing possum"... hence the possum playground...
My brother, Robert, moved to Switzerland and I was talking to him on the phone one Memorial Day holiday... thinking about what a Memorial Day parade would look like there…
I watched Blake Griffin jump over a car to win the dunk contest in 2011...
I was on my honeymoon in an undersea restaurant in the Maldives laughing with my wife (after a few drinks)... "looking at fish and eating fish"...
Which led to this cartoon (which also became my gift to her on our anniversary and the inspiration behind the "immortalize yourself..." pledge)...
Some inspiration came while watching movies... A Christmas Story...
After drawing that one (one of my personal favorites and future Christmas card), the Cyclops character became the subject of a handful of other cartoons I created... this one inspired from An Officer and a Gentleman...
Other cartoons come from sitting down and thinking of what is unique and/or funny about certain animals and then coming up with ways to portray those qualities in a humorous picture... the cow...
or the cat...
I was not sold on this one (cat/catfish) before it was drawn (I thought it would just be a little cute)... but after getting some positive feedback it led to a few others… here is the horse/seahorse version…
Other themes emerged after drawing one cartoon and liking it... like animal court...
Some came from famous quotes... I have a slew of Shakespeare ones yet to be drawn... but one from PT Barnum...
A lot of sports inspired ones... and some combining sports and animals (this was the first Lyon's Den cartoon ever drawn)…

Thank you for your time and support.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
1) Initial e-mail may be delayed beyond December 23 due to slower than expected building of proper infrastructure (obtaining everyone's e-mail address and implementing distribution model). Working on solution now (and e-mail will last for 1-year regardless of start date).
2) Publication issues with 2015 calendar (enough cartoons will be ready to publish the calendar in early 2014).
