About

FabricZoom is a revolutionary digital fabric printer that will empower small businesses and hobbyists to print loose and store-bought fabric on demand at the office or at home.

This is exciting news for fashion designers, crafters, and interior decorators who want to print bespoke fabric designs for use in their own products, as well as for entrepreneurs making unique fabrics for sale online. Fabric printing has an unmet need between the transfers that can be made with a paper inkjet printer, and sending out designs to print-as-a-service companies. Designers can do more with the ability to create unique designs in small print volumes, using textured fabrics printing service companies don’t provide. And they don’t want to wait two weeks for their product. Now, with FabricZoom, designers can print right in the studio on fabric of their own choice, and in exactly the quantity they want. With only 10 inches of wastage per print, printing only a yard is economical and the product is in your hands within minutes.

On-demand printing offers convenience and fast turnaround time - imagine fitting a client, choosing a pattern, and having the material in hand for their approval before they come back from coffee! Bespoke products allow clients to make last minute changes to color or material without adding to project time. If a print doesn’t turn out well with a certain material, it can be cancelled after one inch - just alter the design and try again! Tailors and interior decorators don’t have to stock and inventory prints if any design can be printed in-house as needed.

FabricZoom is a groundbreaking new device that harnesses the power and convenience of printing at a time and place of your choosing, and with a $2,000 price tag it is affordable for any business. Maintenance is the biggest headache with owning a textile printer, and FabricZoom’s innovative system includes auto-calibration features that allow you to feed fabrics of different thickness or stretch without customization. Fabrics can be loaded loose, or in full bolts as with most textile printers. With our pre-treatment solutions, designers can print on cotton, linen, rayon or silk of their choice, including textured or pre-dyed fabrics.

Our flagship product is capable of 150 dpi resolution and comes in 36” or 54” print widths (39” or 57” maximum fabric width). In addition to our proprietary auto-calibration system, the FabricZoom includes self-cleaning features to allow intermittent use. We also offer a custom software package for optimizing images for our printer, as well as transforming small images into repeating or alternating textile patterns.

The FabricZoom printing platform involves no toxic chemicals and textiles are dyed with high-quality reactive ink to withstand washing while offering vivid colors and excellent handfeel. We designed a product we would be comfortable using in our own homes (and we do!).

FabricZoom LLC is located in Beaverton, Oregon. Our products are designed, assembled and tested in our Oregon facility to ensure high standards of quality and accountability.  We also supply pre-mixed inks, pre-treatment solutions for fabric and other accessories.  Our web store will go online at the end of the Kickstarter.  We will be offering free pickup of printers from our Beaverton office, or at special drop-off days in Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Local designers are already using our product to make clothes, furniture and more - read about their experiences with this innovative new product, watch demonstration videos and learn more at www.FabricZoom.com

Risks and challenges

We have five working printers - three in our workshop and two with local users making products. The oldest has been printing daily for five months. Our electronics and software are at a mature stage, so we are confident that we can add some polish and have those ready to ship as planned.

This Kickstarter is needed to order our printheads and other components in bulk, which saves on component costs that we can pass onto the user. In the case of the printheads, they can't even be ordered in retail quantities. Depending on the number of printers we build, our printhead supplier may need to setup a production run just for us, but they are happy to arrange this - it will just mean a six-week delay if that comes to pass. Our supplier has assured us they have enough printheads in stock for our "early-bird" pledges. We have multiple suppliers for all our other components, so one way or the other we can source those in time.

We already have a relationship with an experienced contract manufacturing company in Beaverton, OR (in the same office park as our workshop) that has gone over our design. Their staff assisted in building our Fifth machine, so they've been over everything there is to see and they are comfortable with the design. This means we don't have to train brand-new staff or create new quality-control procedures, since they have all that in place. They also have minimum volume requirements to keep a production line open, which is another reason for this Kickstarter.

We want to stress that this project isn't at the "cool idea" stage - we have working machines, so our risks are primarily that we might face delays in supply or manufacturing that mean we deliver our products late. We will certainly keep our backers informed if they are any delays, and what our plans are to get their pledge rewards to them as quickly as possible.

Our US shipping estimate is based on actual quotes for cross-country shipping to a residence, but shipping to other countries is only a very rough estimate and does not include customs. We'll quote each international order on a case-by-case basis after the Kickstarter, and if you'd like a specific quote before pledging, please contact us directly.
