About this project

The Long Road is a personal documentary about going against the odds and competing in the biggest fighting game tournament in the world.

To describe this project, I'll have to start with myself. My name is Dave Vogt. I'm a 33 year old father of four, and what you could sum up as... let's say gaming enthusiast. I work with a company that runs charitable events featuring video games. I write about them, promote them, and compete in them, with several world record titles. The one thing I desperately want to do is try my hand at the top level of competition in fighting games, though. Since first coming across Street Fighter II in '92 or so, I've been hooked. Despite this, playing rather well, and following the scene for years, stepping up to that greatest challenge has always eluded me. Whether it was family, work, music, or anything else, it just wasn't in the cards. That is changing.

This year I'm competing in Evolution 2013. There are plenty of reasons that I'll fail. Age, lack of competitive experience... but it doesn't matter. Top 8 or bottom 8, doesn't matter. I want to prove to myself that I can step up to the challenge, and show the world that anybody can follow their passion. Even if it is something as seemingly frivolous as competitive video games.

The Long Road is very much a passion project. It is meant to inform and educate people in this field of competition; and most importantly, empower people to take a shot at what they love, no matter what it is. Being as the film is about video gaming, expect it to be a whole lot of fun, too. Games, antics, colorful characters, and a heavy original soundtrack will make for a good time.

So, what is the money for? Equipment, hardware, and software. Studio and production costs for the original (heavy!) soundtrack. Production costs for the film, and the creation of all the super cool perks! This project is definitely on the cheaper side, so more funds will certainly reflect in a better final product!

  Stretch Goal:

$12,000- If we can hit $12,000 raised, there will be a second disc included with the DVD of the film. The amount of footage is going to be staggering, so a way to shed more light into this weird, wonderful world will do the project a great service.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risks and challenge that we'll face is getting quality face to face interview time with tournament organizers. The event has grown exponentially over the past several years, and it can be difficult for those folks to set aside time. The contingency plan for this is to conduct and record interviews over Skype.
Besides that, every step will be taken to ensure that footage is backed up and safeguarded, and everything can move along at a steady pace.
