Battle maps are awesome!
Everyone knows that having a wonderful resin scenery set-up, or a fancy neoprene battle map for those set-piece battles is great.
But what about random encounters or locations you haven’t planned for? Or what if (like me) you simply don’t have the budget for loads of scenery?
And how do you even transport all that stuff to the game anyway? And even then, how do you keep things sufficiently varied?
When I started using maps and miniatures for my own RPG games these were questions I had to find answers to.
And that’s where my map tiles come in.
Supplied in sets of 30, my double-sided, card-stock map tile sets will fit in a coat pocket and won’t break the bank.
Designed to be extremely flexible in usage they cover 4 main locations: Forest, Mountain Pass, Heathland and Cavern.
The art is all hand-made. I use digital painting programs rather than 3d renders, so everything has a nice handmade feel that blends right in with painted miniatures.
They’re six inches square - a size I have come to really love in my home games. It’s a great balance of flexibility, allowing you to build very different encounter maps from a few tiles, with extreme portability. 120 tiles will fit in your bag with ease and allow endless set ups on the fly.
Here's the bullet points:
- 30 tiles per set
- 4 Sets available: Mountain Pass, Forest, Cavern and Heathland
- Full colour
- Printed on 270gsm card-stock
- Highly connectable within each set
- 6 inches square
- Gridded and Grid-free options available
- Digital versions available for virtual table tops
- Shipping is included in your pledge
Each tile is repeated in the set so you can have at least one more than one of a particularly useful tile in any set up. Each set has at least twenty two unique faces - I've added more of any given tile where it seemed useful to have spares.
And of course, if you want to be really fancy, just pledge for two lots of each set, and then you can make whatever you like without restraint!
The tiles are full colour, 6 inches square and printed on card-stock, in the USA. It’s important to note that it’s a key feature of the design that these tiles are NOT board - they're not made from the stuff board game tokens are made from. They're printed on 270gsm card-stock, and with good reason: 30 board tiles just wouldn’t fit in your jacket pocket, and would cost a lot more!
This is an important point. With many years in games production under my belt I could have these made on board, or indeed other, fancier materials. And maybe another time I'll make something more demanding and expensive. But for this nice straightforward Kickstarter I want the tiles to be both affordable and transportable.
They are professionally printed, with a nice satin finish. Let's take a look at some of my samples. These are the real thing:
Here's a low resolution PDF of the whole Cavern Set.
Classic dungeon stuff, this set features narrow passages (two squares wide on the inch grid versions, sometimes narrowing down to one), cramped chambers, and various intersections. There are also lots of tiles for making larger chambers from more than one tile.
There are tiles for 2 tile rooms, 3 and 4 tiles rooms, and even larger caves using the cave floor spacer tiles. It's a really versatile set for making that spontaneous troll hole along the road, or a small series of caves to explore.
Available with or without a one inch grid. You'll be able to choose at the end of the campaign.
A series of narrow paths through the green, this set is great for rolling travel on woodland paths. There are a variety of tiles for constructing various size of clearing. There's a tomb entrance, a pool, a woodland stream-crossing and more.
The Forest Set is available with or without a one inch grid. You'll be able to choose at the end of the campaign.
The Mountain Pass set works as a variant dungeon too, but is intended for crossing mountain terrain. It has cliff edges both up and down for walls. There are loads of stepped levels in this set, and tiles to make large arenas in the rock.
Here's the real thing in action:
The Mountain Pass set, like all the sets, is available with or without a one inch grid. You'll be able to choose at the end of the campaign.
The Heathland Set one doesn't have the obvious paths or passage ways of the other sets - well not quite. It features rolling open wilderness, scattered with depressions, gullies and rocks. And there's a selection of road tiles that run through the open country. Here's half the set of 30 tiles in action:
The Heathland Set is available with or without a one inch grid. You'll be able to choose at the end of the campaign.
For this Kickstarter we have just four stretch goals. They have all been unlocked.
Our aim here is to keep things nice and easy for everyone, and to deliver in a timely fashion.
These are the entirety of our stretch goals for this Kickstarter:
£500 - We fund UNLOCKED!
The tiles become real!
£750 - Linking tiles UNLOCKED!
These "linking tiles" bridge between the sets, allowing you to mix them together. There will be 30 tiles in this set, with just the same specification as the initial sets. To get these, simply amend your pledge to include an additional set of tiles.
£1000 - Extra Detail Tiles UNLOCKED!
This is another set of 30 tiles you'll be able to add to your pledge, which feature more specific detailed locations to each of the pre-existing tile sets. To get these, simply amend your pledge to include an additional set of tiles.
(Mock up to come!)
£6000 - Dungeon Tile Set UNLOCKED!
This is another set of 30 tiles you can add to your pledge, which features rectangular dungeon chambers and corridors. To get these, simply amend your pledge to include an additional set of tiles.
Here's a mock up of the Dungeon Tiles in progress:
The art is complete for the initial four sets, layout is done, and they’re ready to be printed.
Work on the linking tiles and the extra detail sets is well underway, and is a case of customising existing files, rather than making new images from scratch. So if we're lucky enough to unlock those, that won't delay us, nor move the estimated delivery date.
The Dungeon Tile set was a surprise addition, but is in layout now.
We have to wait 2 weeks for KS to process pledges, during which time I'll make any additional art I may need to.
Printing will require a proofing process which takes a few weeks. Once we’re happy with the proofs, we’ll have the printer send out your tiles direct to you for US orders. For those of us elsewhere in the world we’ll order a single large batch to the UK and dispatch from there.
We are aiming to be all wrapped up way before Brexit makes things anymore complicated.
I make art, write and design games. You may have seen my work in Dungeons & Dragons, The One Ring, Adventures in Middle-earth, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Warhammer Historical, Dragon Warriors, Beyond the Wall and many other games. You may have even played the Forest Dragon, a game I made with my young sons. For a long time I was creative director at Cubicle 7. Now I run my own games company, Handiwork Games.
I also run a very friendly Patreon here: www.jonhodgsonmaps.com, from whence this idea all springs.
I'm ably assisted in this project by Paul Bourne, who is an amazing graphic designer. Paul has a ton of experience in prepping files for print, and he's helped me get everything ready for production, as well as producing the wonderful graphics you see on this campaign page.
Something I want to do with this Kickstarter is move toward the heady days of being a (more or less) lone creator with a cool thing looking for support. And if you like it, you can get some of the cool things for supporting the project.
My aim is to keep it simple, and to deliver as smoothly as humanly possible.
I’m a person, you’re a person, and maybe if a bunch of us get together we can make a cool thing happen! That’s super awesome and what Kickstarter is all about, right?
While I’m going to make every reasonable effort to spread the word of this campaign, I’m not going to use external, paid promoters. I’ll just rely on anyone who wants to help me to spread the word, like the olden days. And that means I'm not anticipating any huge pile of loot here - I just want to gather together everyone who sees a use for my tiles, and together we can make them happen!
I know far too many people who’ve burned themselves out and really damaged their mental health using Kickstarter, trying to please everyone and squeeze out every drop of revenue. And that’s not right for this project or for me.
And if there’s not enough interest, or this isn’t exactly the project you’re looking for? Never mind! It’s all good! We'll have some fun along the way!
Pledging is easy - simply choose from the menu of rewards how many sets of tiles you'd like. All the sets cost the same, and are all comprised of 30 double sided tiles. Just pick how many you'd like. You can adjust your pledge throughout the campaign.
There's a really good deal to be had in pledging for more than one set, and free shipping will not be available after the campaign ends. So don't miss out!
This section is nice and easy: Shipping is included for simplicity's sake. I've spend a loooong time working out all our costs, and it should work out just fine for us, while keeping things nice and easy for you.
Thanks for reading this far, and I hope you like the tiles and decide to support us bringing them to life!
The beautiful Viking Dice are from http://www.dicedudes.co.uk/product/viking-dice-set/
The awesome Miniatures are from Red Box Games: http://red-box-games.com
The gorgeous Deven Rue Compass Rose is from Campaign Coins: https://campaigncoins.com/deven-rue-compass-rose/
All appear here by kind permission of their creators, and I thank them for their support and encourage you to support them in turn!
Risks and challenges
I've run two previous Kickstarters and both delivered nice and quickly. The first doubled in size through the campaign, so slipped a little on initial estimates - we really didnt think we'd enjoy such support!
Having learned from that, the second campaign was better prepared, and we delivered approximately one month early to most backers and on time to everyone else. That's our aim here too - to deliver ahead of time if we possibly can.
One "risk" is that we're not really taking requests on this campaign. If you have an amazing idea for a set of tiles, or a feature that should be included, we might be able to include that in a future campaign. But this set of tiles is all planned out, and the work is almost entirely done. So in order to meet our targets of a nice simple campaign that delivers on time, we can't change course very much.
Another is that because our work is largely done I won't delay delivery by adding more sets that need to be made from scratch, so if you're looking for a campaign that explodes with extra content, maybe this one isn't for you. But hopefully, there's plenty to enjoy from the get-go!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
