About River Run Wide
River Run Wide is the debut solo album from Seattle-based folk musician Alex Sturbaum. It will feature a combination of traditional songs and newly composed folk songs, many of them written by Alex himself. The songs and their arrangements draw influence from various folk traditions, including Irish, Scottish, American, and maritime. The album has a tentative release date of late May/early June, and has an all-star cast of guest musicians, including the members of Alex's bands Gallimaufry and Countercurrent, and some of the finest singers and players Seattle has to offer.
Making an album
Making an album is a big project! For the last six months, I've been selecting songs, practicing, arranging, and planning logistics with the studio and with the friends who have agreed to lend their talents to this album as guest musicians. Starting in February 2017, I'll be recording at AcousticPrism studios in Woodinville, WA under the expertise of Gerard Hranek, who has great experience working with folk and traditional musicians. After the recording comes the mixing and mastering process, and after that comes the album artwork, CD design, and finally sending the whole shebang off for duplication. I'm hoping to have CD's in hand for a release in late May/early June!
My goal is to raise $6,000 to offset the recording, production, and duplication fees, with a second stretch goal of $7,500 to cover additional costs. Any amount over $6,000 helps, of course, but with $7,500 all of the most pressing expenses would be covered. Beyond that, any additional funds would go directly into making the album better.
- Album design/duplication
- Travel expenses for guest musicians
- Miscellaneous expenses (song royalties, photography, publicity, etc.)
In addition to the warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with helping independent music and a copy of the CD in your hands, there are some nifty rewards you can get! If there's something you wish was available that you don't see there, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do!
Spread the Word
I've got one more small favor to ask you. The success of a crowdfunding campaign like this is directly tied to how many people it can reach. Regardless of whether or how much you can contribute, it would mean a lot if you could help get the word out!
I am incredibly grateful for your support, and for the communities that have made it possible for me to undertake this project. I'm so excited to embark on this journey with all of you. Let's make a record!
Risks and challenges
Every recording project is complicated and difficult, and there's always the chance that unexpected things will come up. I have completed several professional studio recording projects as members of other bands, so I'm confident in my ability to keep the project on track. I've also met with the studio engineer, researched printing costs, etc., and am certain this project can stay within budget.
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing platform. That means that if we don't make our goal, the album won't get funded. However, if we can get enough people involved, we can make this happen without anyone having to give more than they feel comfortable with. With that in mind, please consider sharing this with your friends, family, and anyone you might know who loves traditional music and independent artists!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
