I am in the studio, once again with Blue Horizon, recording 13 new songs for my 21st CD, titled Loving Light. These include some new tunes that relate to Great Lakes history as well as a few folk songs that were popular from years past. Songs such as Reilly's Ghost, Out on Holiday, Midnight Lullaby, Together Remembered, and Loving Light, were written by myself, inspired from Great Lake's lore and celebrate much of the positive side of life. Some other songs included are a few I remember from my early days in the folk scene. They are Whale Song (Steve Grimes), Frobisher Bay (James Gordon), Storm on the River (David H.B. Drake), and The Soo Line (Craig Johnson). Filling out this CD will be the traditional song Cumberland's Crew, sung by lakes sailors over 150 years ago, The Blue Pike Song about environmental issues in Lake Erie, an instrumental, Coffee on the Front Porch, as well as a new song by Stephen Jones titled The Road We Build.
My new group, Blue Horizon, is Mike Bradburn (bass and vocal), Joel Simpson (mandolin, tenor banjo, dobro and vocal), and Greg Smith (percussion). We are having a great time laying down these new tracks at Norwest's new studio in Barrington, Illinois. In addition, the Dock Wallopers (Steve Lindenmeyer, Bill Pufahl, and Richard Shields) and Danielle Larson are contributing their vocal dynamics to this project.
In the past, record companies would keep information about a new album under wraps until it was released. That no longer is the case. We are inviting You, our fans, to participate in this new project! Recording and manufacturing an album like this will cost us about $15,000.00. Previously, I was able to cover these costs through sales of my earlier work. Sales, though, have been soft and revenue from digital downloads and music streaming have not lived up to expectations. Yet these songs should be enjoyed by folk music fans for their sense of place and history.
So join us! Check out our rewards packages, (we have many), and see which one best suits you. Some of these items offered in the rewards are not available just anywhere. Also, watch for updates as the campaign continues and we add a new reward package or post new video and audio clips to keep you informed on our progress. By contributing to this kickstarter, you will become part of our team. Together, we will be able to make another great recording and continue to spread songs of the Great Lakes near and far!
Risks and challenges
If you don't know much about Kickstarter, here are a few quick facts:
1. It's totally secure. Kickstarter will process your payment using their secure servers, and You don't pay until October 30, the day the project ends. However, if you are nervous about using online payment, please give us a call and we will help you with alternative ways to pay by phone or mail. 630-557-2742, 9 am to 8 pm central time, seven days, now until October 30.
2. The "kicker" part of Kickstarter is this: I need $9,200 to help pay for production (it's going to cost over $15000). If I do not get enough people to pledge the full $9,200 funding goal, then I get nothing! And you don't pay until we reach our goal.
3. Kickstarter and ultimately ME! are part of a team that insures that if you pledge and pay, you will receive the reward/premium that you purchased.
(If you still have a concern about Kickstarter, please email us using the "Contact Me" link: top, right-hand page or call us at 630-557-2742
I've been making CDs for a long time, and I have a strong team behind me, people I know I can count on because they've come through for me in the past. As this Kickstarter campaign goes live, we are almost finished with the recording on this project. We'll be busy during October preparing the cover art, mastering and getting the manufacturing under way.
The main challenge for a new release is getting the word out. Typically, we send two to three hundred copies of a new album to radio stations for airplay and dozens of copies for review in magazines and the news media. We intend to intensify this a bit more than usual on my facebook page and new web site due to the new musicians working with me and singer-songwriter nature of this recording. Your participation will help us to meet that goal, too.
In fact, if we are lucky enough to meet our $9,200 goal before October 30, we will be able to continue to raise funds to help pay for paid publicity professionals to help us to get the CD to the right media persons and radio stations, so that the music can be heard far and wide.
Every participant, every pledge, is appreciated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
