We have the great fortune of making a film about one of the most remarkable women of our time: Dr. Vandana Shiva.
How did this child science prodigy who trekked the foothills of the Himalayas with her forest conservator father grow up to become Monsanto’s worst nightmare?
Why did this nuclear physicist and dedicated scientist become a full time advocate for the voiceless and vulnerable and one of the world’s greatest eco-activists?
Why does she persist today despite the vitriolic attacks against her?
Of all the battles Vandana Shiva has been fighting for the past forty years--from climate change, to water wars, to deforestation and loss of species—they all converge in the conflict over our food systems: from seed to table.
There is a battle between the Goliaths of industrial agriculture and the Davids defending ecological food systems. On the frontline stands Vandana Shiva, facing down the interests of money and power, fearlessly defending the small farmers—mostly women—who feed their communities.
The film is about one of these women--often described as the successor to Gandhi--and her place in an unstoppable movement for change.
WHY IS THIS FILM SO IMPORTANT?
Do we want what we grow and what we eat to be determined by a few giant corporations whose first and foremost agenda is profit before people and planetary well-being?
Imagine a world where small farmers are respected as experts in the processes of nature and are honored as stewards of our arable land.
What about a world where farmers are no longer replaced by massive machines force-feeding toxic chemicals into vast monocultures of GMO seeds?
The film is important because Vandana Shiva articulately and scientifically presents the alternative: Ecological agriculture that restores biodiversity, organic seed freedom, healthy soil, fresh water and clean air.
IT IS ALSO THE FIRST AND ONLY FILM TO TELL HER LIFE STORY.
Dr. Shiva appears briefly in countless environmental films and her talks and interviews are all over YouTube. This has created a worldwide desire to know more about her: Who is this woman? Where does she come from? How did she become such a powerful figure?
THE SEEDS OF VANDANA SHIVA will answer all of those questions and more.
HOW WILL YOUR CONTRIBUTION HELP?
Your generous contribution will help move this project toward completion and distribution!
It is also a way to tell corporations: You can buy politicians. You can buy mainstream media. But we still have the power to put together and broadcast another perspective.
It simply requires enough of us wanting that perspective to be seen and heard. Remember, most people don’t know that a few multinationals are taking control of our food systems. Most people don’t know there’s a better way. This film will project the voice of Vandana Shiva and the vision for agroecology further and wider than ever before.
The goal of $30K will not finish the film. But it WILL push us into the home stretch.
And right now we’re racing a ticking clock:
We need to get to India in October to gather important footage for the end of the film. Vandana has invited us to join her as she travels with other eco-luminaries on the Touch the Earth Soil Pilgrimage, which will include a visit to Gandhi’s ashram and to Indore where the modern organic movement began.
The group will also meet and offer support to the widows of farmers who--seduced by Big Ag’s false promises--went into a debt spiral and took their own lives.
In addition to filming, we’ll research archival footage and hire an animator. We’ll also invest in equipment and important outreach during this crucial next phase of the film.
WHO ARE THE FILMMAKERS?
WHERE DOES THE PROJECT STAND NOW?
In film terms we are in the post-production phase. Thanks to a generous grant our two editors have been hard at work since May. The footage includes following the indefatigable Vandana across four continents and numerous hours of interviews with her. We have also completed important and revealing interviews with:
Son Kartikey Shiva • Sister Mira Shiva • Brother Kuldip Shiva • Old Friends • New Friends • Her Inner Circle • Seed Savers • Farmers • Foodies • Philosophers • Colleagues in Science • Allies in Activism
We plan to launch the film on Earth Day 2016.

Risks and challenges
There are always risks and challenges to completing a quality feature length documentary. It demands a passionate commitment to the subject and stamina to stay the course. We certainly have that.
With our editors at work on a first cut with abundant footage, we’re in excellent shape to finish the film.
The next challenge becomes post-production, and the risk here is funding. We’ve thrown ourselves into the project along with our own resources, incredible volunteer help, and a good grant. More funding will be needed, but your Kickstarter support will help move us closer.
Dr. Shiva is constantly attacked by corporate media and pro-GMO bloggers--even her Wikipedia page is regularly sabotaged. We anticipate THE SEEDS OF VANDANA SHIVA will be criticized when it is released, but see no risk to completion from her detractors.
Our biggest challenge is to make a great film. We'll do it!
