"A love triangle is unraveled when a young painter is approached by an admirer who eases him into making sense of his relationship with his wife."
Back in October 2013, we took to Kickstarter to raise money for a new UK feature film, "Creditors", starring BAFTA-nominated Christian McKay, Andrea Deck and Simon Callow and based on a play by August Strindberg.
We asked for too much money, we didn't meet our goal - so we pulled the project from Kickstarter. It wasn't all bad though: we made new friends, got quite a lot of people supporting the project, we were picked by Directors UK and were featured on their curated Kickstarter page, and Filmforecaster picked us as one of the top film Kickstarters at the time.
Additionally, people like actor Alan Rickman (who inspired me to turn the stage play into a film with his 2008 stage revival in London), American baritone Thomas Hampson and English actress Sally Dexter came forward to support us - and pledged for the project.
We amassed quite a lot of views on YouTube and were covered in local and international press. So what didn't work? Who knows. Once we pulled the project, we came close to securing funding outside of Kickstarter - twice - via different investors in the US - until we finally decided to relocate the story somewhere cheaper (but still perfect) slashing the budget in half in the process.
And then we secured funding for - most - of the film on the new budget.
We're shooting this Spring, in Spain.
So, now we're coming back to Kickstarter in the hopes of raising £10,000 for post-production and publicity.
Because you shouldn't give up on something just because it didn't work out when you first had a go at it, and because all of the people who supported us the first time, should still be able to do so.
Fancy supporting us?
1. Pick an amount you'd like to donate and click on "Back This Project"
Either at the top of the page on your computer, or bottom on your phone (location may vary on the app - just look for a big green button)
2. Make sure you select a reward tier available for your donation
If you pledge £350 say, you can choose between rewards 4, 3, 2 and 1. If you pledge £25, you can only choose between rewards 2 and 1. You can also choose to pledge, and get "no reward". But that's crazy. Come on.
3. Go through the necessary steps to process the pledge
If funding is successful by the end date, your pledge will be processed within 14 days, and we'll make sure you have access to your rewards as soon as possible.
Your money will go towards post-production (sound editing, image editing, lab processing, mastering) and publicity (festivals submissions, public relations, flights to and from festivals for promotional purposes etc.). Simple.
Creditors Outside of Kickstarter:
Risks and challenges
This project has been in the works for 3 years. With a failed Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1913997996/creditors-the-film), a series of funding opportunities that dissolved - and then the fact we still managed to find funding to begin shooting in the Spring - it's safe to say we've grown from all of the bumps and obstacles we've encountered along the road, and have learnt from them and have come out stronger on the other end.
As for our team - actors, crew - we're a mix of new talent and seasoned pros. We've worked with some great directors, writers and actors, and most of us have collectively been obsessed about this project for over 6 months now, which is when we all came together for the first time around it.
However much you pledge will go towards making something that'll make you proud to be a part of.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
At the moment of writing the description of the £50 reward, we were unsure of whether we would be able to credit someone pledging for that reward on IMDB, on top of crediting them at the end of the film.
We wanted to make sure we had several levels of "thanks" (notice how we mention "thanks" and "special thanks" in different rewards).
Now we know we can credit you on IMDB, but Kickstarter won't let us edit a reward description once someone's pledged towards it.
So now you know. "And knowing is half the battle." (G.I. Joe)
