About this project
NOTE TO POTENTIAL BACKERS: Your credit card will not be charged unless we reach our funding target of $65,000.00 at the end of 30 days. If we don't reach our goal, then you get charged nothing. Also, it should be noted that this is a fan-film only. It will have no commercial release. The only way to see the final product is if you are a backer at the $25 level or above.
The Project in a nutshell...
The goal of this project is to reproduce an entire 20 minute episode of the classic 60's animated adventure show, Jonny Quest, using stop motion with models. I have already recreated the first 90 seconds using this technique, which you can see below!
In the early 60's, one animated cartoon show stood out from the rest. Jonny Quest did not begin as the Saturday morning program that most people remember. Indeed, JQ was originally a prime time action/adventure show meant for the entire family.
Daring in concept and brilliant in execution, it featured the unparalleled design work of Doug Wildey and the awesome, AWESOME jazz music of Hoyt Curtin. To this day, when I hear the opening theme song, I have to stop and drift back to a time when adventure was simple and didn't involve pixels or video gaming. Nazi bad guys, exotic locations, danger, intrigue and every sci-fi gadget a kid could imagine made Jonny Quest THE show to watch during the brief, single season it was on. Long before Indiana Jones ever cracked a whip, there was Jonny Quest.
Jonny Quest Gets The Treatment
A year ago, I posted my stop motion valentine to the coolest animated TV show ever made. To be clear, this was an art project and I did it for my own personal satisfaction. I also thought maybe, just maybe there might be a few hundred JQ fans around the country that would enjoy this. Boy was I wrong. My 90 second, stop motion recreation of the JQ title sequence went viral, amassing hundreds of thousands of hits from around the world. Interviews and calls came in from far and wide about the project (see links below).
But most importantly, I have received tons of emails from people wanting to see more; wanting to see a FULL EPISODE done in the very same style.
And I agree.
So, this is my project....
...to produce and animate a single episode from the series in stop motion, just like I did the title sequence. I know. I can't wait to watch it, either.
How will I do it?
The same way I did the opening titles. I will break one 20 minute episode down into separate cuts and do a frame count of their length and use those cuts as illustrated guides to what the animation should look like and how they should move. Like the title sequence I have already produced, the separate sections will then be cut together to match the original sound track, thus preserving the original "feel" of the show but with the added value of being in dimensional stop motion.
This project is just for fun....
...but stop motion is a very labor intensive, time consuming process. While the opening title sequence was paid for out of pocket, working in my spare time, this project is far more involved and will require a degree of commitment that goes beyond the bootstrap approach to funding. So that's why I'm asking all JQ fans out there to help me get this project off the ground. Who knows? Maybe we can bring Jonny Quest back to the home television screen. Just imagine, ALL the episodes rebooted in stop motion with the original sound tracks.
But, for now, let's just get this one finished so we can all sit back, have a grilled cheese, and watch it. And, hey, I already have the first 90 seconds in the can!
Thanks for your consideration!
