Mister Mercury: A Modern Greek Myth is the little Greek mythology novel that could. Despite all odds, it has finally broken through its barriers and become a real print book. The ebook came out in March, and the print book came out in May. And here it is!
It's a story about the not-so-humble trickster god of Olympus, Hermes, taking it upon himself to fool the modern, cynical humans into worshiping him (and the other gods, if they are nice enough). How does he do this?
Why, by dressing up as a ridiculous superhero parody of himself named Mister Mercury, of course! It's a story about faith, of gods, of comic books, of robots, of flying stretch limos, and at least one explanation for the Roswell crash.
It took eight years of writing and two years of formatting, editing, and publishing. It's been a long, uphill battle that is almost over...
It has hit just one last snag: bookstore and library distribution. I previously used Lulu.com to print and distribute the book, but Lulu does not offer an enticing discount to bookstores (only 15%, when most stores require at least 45%). Their printing costs are also high: The lowest I could possibly offer for the trade paperback version is $17, and that's if I make no profit at all. Additionally, Lulu charges a king's ransom for shipping, even though they use Media Mail, which is supposed to be the absolute cheapest method to ship a book anywhere in the United States. Buying a copy of the Mister Mercury trade paperback costs almost as much as a hardcover book, depending on the vendor.
Libraries also require a larger discount than Lulu offers, so let's not forget them! This is the Special Library Edition (for libraries) after all.
But all that could change! With your help.
With just a little assistance, I could purchase an ISBN and produce that book with IngramSpark. I already have the necessary files, I just need to use them with a different service.
Printing costs will be reduced, and bookstores will have a large discount. That way it'll be cheaper and easier to get the book into waiting hands!
And how do people like the book so far? Just check out the Amazon reviews to find out.
WHAT I NEED:
Currently the book has Ingram distribution, which means that independent bookstores and libraries can technically order it. But the discount offered by Lulu.com is very unappealing: Only 15% off wholesale price, and after shipping and labor costs, book stores would end up selling the book for less money than what they put into it (which is not actually a dandy way of doing business).
So I will instead be cutting out the Lulu middleman, and go straight to Ingram themselves, using their service, IngramSpark.
IngramSpark, unlike Lulu, is not free: It requires the purchase of an ISBN (International Serial Book Number), and has an additional setup fee. But there is a trade-off for those up-front costs: The book is cheaper to print, and there is a bigger discount for book stores and libraries! Additionally, those retailers are able to return the book if it does not sell, which is another major plus.
Let's work together to finally get this book into the hands of people who didn't even know they wanted it!
What is a Kickstarter without juicy goodies?
You can use this as a cheaper method of buying the book instead of paying Powell's $18 (That price does NOT include the shipping!), as the current version requires. Or you can come away with cool things like Mister Mercury bookmarks or these mugs!
Wine Label: Class up your Bordeaux with this bodacious wine label featuring Dionysus in a sweet frock coat. Ever had a bottle of wine so good it makes you angry? Dionysus feels your pain-- he's the one who caused it after all.
Currently these designs are available on mugs and the wine label, but if I make more than my goal, I have some stretch goals in mind! I can make shirts, hats, or other accessories as well. If this project does especially well, I can create a store for Mister Mercury related merchandise.
There is more to come!
Risks and challenges
The files and formatting are already finished, I just need to purchase a separate, non-Lulu ISBN and design and print the rewards. Additionally, IngramSpark might have a slightly different format than Lulu, and I will need to adjust those files accordingly and consult with my artist. But other than that, there is nothing more to do! Let's get this book out there!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
