The Little Free Library will be placed on a front lawn on Ferndale Street in Albany, NY. This is a great walking neighborhood with lots of foot traffic that will be able to support a Little Free Library, I'm sure. There's an elementary school and a Catholic church at the end of the block plus two synagogues and a Greek Orthodox church in walking distance. Many people regularly go by walking dogs or exercising.
What's a Little Free Library? It's a small library with books that can be taken by anyone and can be restocked by anyone as well. The library collection will be maintained and supported by me and my family on an ongoing basis. See the website here for more information and examples of completed Little Free Libraries out in the wild.
Note: The Little Free Library pictured is the unfinished version we will be purchasing. The completed library will be finished with hardware, plexiglass, and decorations.
What will the kickstarter funds be used for?
- The purchase of an unfinished "Essential" Little Free Library as seen here $218 (with shipping) including registration with the organization and a sign
- Purchase of a Little Free Library "Always a gift, Never for sale" stamp for the books $13
- Finishing supplies (plexiglass, hardware, stain and sealant) $30
- A post & supplies to install the library $50
If any extra funds are raised they will be used for future book purchases and for a few perennials to decorate around the library.
Risks and challenges
Keeping the library stocked with books: I have a large collection of avid reader friends willing to share books. As a librarian, I often get access to advance reader copies I will pass on through the library. When/if necessary, I will purchase books from used book stores and book sales.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
