What exactly is the purpose of this project?
1. The purpose of this Kickstarter project is to raise the money to edit and publish the first book in a series of books I've written. They chronicle the adventures of two children who travel to the magical world of Harmonia where they must learn music in order to help save it from evil forces. The book will be published as a trade paperback, a special hardcover edition, and as an e-book for multiple platforms.
2. To further develop and print a fantasy-adventure card game that follows the story and characters from the book. Players learn musical skills in order to cast spells, acquire resources and level up in the game.
3. To lay the foundation for a variety of entertaining and educational future resources that will make learning music a magical adventure!
What is the Money For?
1. To cover the costs of editing, publishing and printing.
2. To contract the artwork and graphic design, layout etc. for the book, e-book and card game.
3. To fund the music production for the e-book. (all the music in the videos and on the website landofharmonia.com was composed and performed by me, JJ Frank)
What kids are saying about Harmonia:
Who is the Land of Harmonia for?
The Land of Harmonia is for everyone who loves fantasy and music, magic and adventure! It is also a great way for parents and teachers to introduce music in a totally new and exciting way that will inspire both kids and adults.
What is the Land of Harmonia?
The Land of Harmonia is a place where everyone plays music. It is a world of exotic natural beauty and magical beings. Some are very, very tiny, and some are very, very large. Some live on the land, some live in the water and some are even made of light. But all of them play music. They use music and sound to make magic, to heal, to communicate, to jam, and in times when evil threatens, to defend the land.
You say it teaches music so is it a Fantasy/Adventure story? Is it Educational? Is it both?
The Land of Harmonia is a fantasy adventure story set in a world where music is part of the very fabric of life. Sound, music and magic are all based on the secret lore of vibration. But in order to learn to use vibration, one must learn the art of music in order to organize and wield its power. The reader shares the journey of musical discovery with Johnny and Emily, two children from Earth who travel to Harmonia where they must learn music and magic to help save it from and evil sorceress.
Do you have to know anything about music to read it?
What about the Card Game?
For years I have been playing a prototype card game with my students to help them learn concepts of music and to find notes on the staff and on the piano. They and their parents have been asking me if they could buy the card game as it is such a big hit with the kids and teaches them about music. While preserving the original rules on the homemade version, I am developing the next level of the card game that uses the mythology of Harmonia in the genre of fantasy-based card games. Of course all my students act as eager consultants for all things Harmonia. Here is an example from the new card game:
And here is the compendium of musical lore that goes with the game:
Hey, I heard one of the main characters is from Mexico and he speaks Spanish sometimes…that would be cool!
Sí. Johnny (his mom changed his name from Juan when they moved to the U.S.) is from a small village in central Mexico. His abuela is a curandera, or healer, and his abuelo, or grandfather, is a powerful nagual. a medicine man or shaman. Johnny often uses phrases from his native Spanish, but in Harmonia, tiny beings called Murrooms translate the words into English. You'll have to read the book to find out how they do it!
Speaking of JJ Frank, Who Are You?
I am a mild-mannered piano teacher and pianist in Santa Fe, NM. I have been teaching for 15 years and playing every kind of music in every kind of setting for over 25 years. You can find out more about me here. I am also on SoundCloud. My classical improvisations are represented here, and as mentioned earlier, I wrote and performed all the music in the videos and on the website, landofharmonia.com.
About the Book
A blurb for the book cover by editor Greta Nelson:
Magic. It has no place in the real world of twelve year old Emily, except for in the novels she reads to help her escape from the unfairness that is her own life. However, this summer will turn her disbelief on its head as her unwelcome piano lessons introduce her to the power of music, and the discovery of a mysterious scroll and coin launches her (and her infuriatingly optimistic and superstitious almost-step brother Johnny) into the Land of Harmonia. In this world, where music is the pulse of life itself, a battle is raging between the forces of light and darkness, and, in spite of her doubts, Emily realizes that she and Johnny have a crucial role to play in saving the mythical creatures of this land from a fate in which joy and harmony are lost forever. Thus begins a magical, musical journey of unexpectedly epic proportions. Along the way, Emily and Johnny encounter a colorful cast of characters, including jamming Fairies, rhythm-regulating Metrognomes, a thespian dragon, a winged and wacky music professor, guitar-strumming Buddha Bears, an evil sea serpent sorceress, greedy Goth gargoyles, an enigmatic wizard, and many more. The adventure that unfolds is one that will leave Emily, and you, no choice but to believe.

Now we are going for the Stretch Goal!!!
Projects can be funded for more than their stated financial goal. These are called stretch goals. If we have the the good fortune to achieve these, then the following amazing and wonderful things could happen.
$12,000 - This will enable the creation of an Enhanced E-Book that will feature more stunning graphics, interactivity, music and animation.
$15,000 - The card game will receive an add-on feature of musical money called Tala Coins.
Over $25,000 - Development of a Land of Harmonia App that teaches music through gaming and interactive creativity, Music Lesson Books, and a Board Game.

The Myth of the Runes
There is a very special tree in a mystical wood overlooking the Rhythm River. It is called the Grand Staff Tree. It is home to the fourteen guardians of the twelve sacred Music Runes. They are children; very special children. Selected from different races in Harmonia, there are seven girls and seven boys. Each of them live in a different note - Angels, Buddha Bears, Centaurs, Dragons, Elves, Faeries and Ghosts. They spend their days playing music and learning magic - particularly the magic of the Runes in the event that they should ever return. You see, the Runes were stolen by an evil wizard over a thousand years ago. And ever since, their magical power has been slowly fading from Harmonia. It was this very power that kept the world in balance and free from fear.
After mysteriously coming into possession of one of the long lost Runes, Oudovdun the evil sea serpent used its power to imprison the fourteen guardians and their music teacher the Dená sorceress Selena.
It just so happened that at precisely the same time, two children from an unknown world called Earth found another of the Runes. Appearing to be a mysterious dull gray coin, it awakened upon their touch and a portal between the worlds opened. Hordes of demons cascaded through and they had no choice but to escape through the portal where they found themselves in the Land of Harmonia.
They were given a choice by the powerful wizard Pythagoras: join the quest to find the rest of the lost Music Runes and return them to their rightful place on the Grand Staff Tree, or return home home through the portal which would then be closed forever.
Should they decide to stay, they would then learn the secret lore of music and magic in order to find and awaken the remaining Runes and use their power to defeat Oudovdun and her legions of fear and darkness.
Thank you for your support!!!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is that after spending 12 years of my life creating Harmonia, if we don't meet our goal, I'll have to spend a lot longer to save the money to finish and publish the book, and even longer to produce everything else Harmonia, music, games etc. PLEASE HELP ME TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!
I have really researched the rewards and as long as Earth doesn't get hit by an asteroid, I don't see any major obstacles to seeing this project through to completion.
The biggest challenge lies in hoping people love the book. So far, the first sixteen chapters have been read by a class of 7th and 8th graders at a local private school and they LOVED IT!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
