Dark, Beautiful and Eerily Emblematic of the Early 20th Century
From the Creator of "Tarot of the Zirkus Magi" and "Trick or Tarot"
Tinker’s Damn Tarot is the deck that I’m proudest of. And that's why I want to bring it into a new, polished, affordable edition that will reach many more Tarot readers and collectors.
It’s like nothing else out there in Tarot land, a deep and complex pack with its own unique symbology. While the card meanings are derived from Golden Dawn and Waite-Smith traditions, the visual language that the deck uses to express those meanings is completely original, with a fusty, dusty Edwardian flavor that’s both charming and eccentric.
Each one of my award-winning tarot and oracle packs has its origin in the fabulous and fanciful, but under the hood they are thoughtfully and carefully crafted with an eye towards the traditional themes and symbols of Tarot. Far from being merely a "gimmick" deck, TINKER’S DAMN TAROT is designed as a working pack aimed at practitioner and novice alike.
Look Behind You — Into the Future
The deck was originally published using the pricey print-on-demand model that just simply is beyond the means of many readers and collectors. I’m hoping to change all that and reach many new people with a new, affordable edition printed in quantity by my friends at the Shenzhen Wangjing Printing Company, Ltd. They’re the same company that printed my beautiful Trick Or Tarot decks last year, along with many other decks known to most of you.
Everything Old Is New
I’m taking advantage of a new edition to completely re-master the card images so that they’re brighter, clearer and sharper. In addition, approximately a dozen of the cards will be re-designed with new images. I’m doing this both to give the deck a fresh start, and to assure that folks who have already bought the deck at a higher price will have a bona-fide collectors item on their hands when I discontinue that edition at the end of this Kickstarter campaign.
Why Kickstarter Again?
In order to achieve the quality that I want, at a price point that most tarot users and collectors can afford, I need to sell enough pre-orders of the deck to pay for its production, and once again I have turned to Kickstarter to accomplish that. By using Kickstarter to solicit pre-orders, nobody gets charged if the goal isn't met, and nobody is at risk. It's a way of keeping everything simple, structured and clearly above-board.
Choose From Two Collectible Yet Affordable Editions
- The Popular Edition: The 78-card Tinker’s Damn Tarot deck: standard size 2.75” x 4.75” cards, printed on 330 gsm German black core paper, (smooth finish), packaged in a simple tuck box with a 16-page LWB including card meanings and spreads.
- The Limited Special Edition: Here’s something unique: This edition pairs the standard Tinker’s Damn Tarot described above with a second, quite special deck: Tinker’s Damn Mantegna! This versatile new pack expands on the ancient Mantegna Cosmology deck by adding on a whole pantheon of additional elements, including Zodiac, Moon Phase and Totem Animal cards. 78 cards produced to the same specs as the Tarot above. Use it as a stand-alone deck, or combine it with the Tarot to create a massive 156 card uber-deck! As with the Tarot, the Mantega pack is being spruced up and refined for this edition. The two decks will be packaged side-by side in a sturdy, double-wide two-piece box, with a 16 page LWB including card meanings and spreads. Only 500 copies of this special twin-pack will be produced.
All of the designs have been completed.
The re-mastering process is well along: as of Feb. 20, all but 1 of the tarot cards and a little more than a third of the Mantegna cards are done, and I expect to be done well before the Kickstarter deadline. As always, I will keep all of you up to date right here with all the project details as we go along. Who Am I?
I am a graphic artist, writer and cartoonist with 35+ years experience across all three disciplines. Three years ago I successfully funded my first tarot deck, Tarot of the Zirkus Mägi. Since then I have created several other popular Tarot, Oracle and Lenormand packs, offering them through my website, Tarot By Duck Soup. Most of my decks (excepting only the ones I have funded here via Kickstarter) are produced as “print on demand” decks. That is what I am gradually trying and hoping to change with these multiple Kickstarter campaigns.
The money raised here will cover the printing & shipping expenses of the TWO decks, plus Kickstarter and Amazon fees. I can't do this without your pre-order support.
Thank you all in advance for your kind support and encouragement!
Risks and challenges
I've done this a couple of times before. Once the project is funded, the risks are negligible. Barring a few revisions, the card designs are all done and ready to go.
I’m working with a reliable printing company that does great quality work. As soon as the deck is funded, I will give them the green light; the entire process takes about three months to complete. It will be documented beginning to end through Updates here.
Getting all the "rewards" assembled and shipped out can be fussy and time-consuming, but If this project is funded, it will be completed and delivered in as timely a fashion as possible by myself (not using any third-party fulfillment services) -- and I have plenty of happy supporters from my previous projects to vouch for that!
After all, I'm just like you: a lover of books, tarot decks and movies who starts to ask "Where's my stuff?" the second that I plunk down my shekels. I feel your pain. Also I can't stand having things hanging over my head: I'm going to want to get this thing done just as much as you want it done!
