About this project
Welcome to the Show: Ladies, Gentlemen and Children of All Ages!
As we go into the final two days of the Kickstarter project, the final press proof has arrived from the printers. After you read this page, be sure to check out Update #9 for pictures of the actual finished deck!
Thanks to you, the campaign has succeeded and The Tarot of the Zircus Magi will be published! There are still plenty of copies available, but only a few days to get them at the pre-publication price.
I have wanted to design a tarot deck for some time, but could not settle on a specific approach. The decision to do a circus-themed deck came about through another, unrelated project -- a fantasy novel (soon to be released in conjunction with this deck) called See Them Dance.
Well into the writing, I discovered that one of the characters was a telepath and a fortune teller... and it occurred to me that she NEEDED her own personal deck -- of course it would have to be circus themed. I decided to open each chapter of the story with a full-page image of a tarot card, each card in some way prefiguring the events of the chapter and/or prominent characters from the book.
All of this was really just an excuse for me to take time away from the writing to work on what I thought was a wonderful idea, something that would be viable as a real working deck in its own right.
The result is Mme. Loviise's Tarot of the Zirkus Magi, a rich blend of jollity and magic, of Mysticism and high-flying performance art. You supply the popcorn: Tarot of the Zirkus Magi provides access to the Great Show of Life that Never Ends.
Tarot of the Zirkus Magi combines two of my lifelong interests: the performing arts, specifically circus arts, and mysticism. Though I have owned decks and been interested in the tarot for all of my adult life, I did not start studying tarot seriously until quite recently. Creating this deck has been both a learning experience and a labor of love. None of these designs were tossed off casually. I did a lot of research for each one and worked hard to match the meaning and message with the image and presentation. Far from just being a "gimmick" deck or a promo piece to help sell a book, I have made every effort to create a genuine working deck aimed at practitioner and novice alike, and I hope that copies of it will go to people who will use it that way. I made it not just to look good (although I hope it does) but to talk and to tell and to interact.
The first release of the deck will be a Majors-only version published at the same time as, and available with or without the novel. I am currently at work on a complete 78-card version that will be published in the first quarter of 2014. Supporting this project will also help in the development of the full deck.
I have tried to apply the language and history of the circus to a cross-pollination of Waite-Smith and Crowley Thoth symbolism. The full deck including pip cards will combine those two systems even more. My friend Carrie Paris (creator of the Magpie Oracle and co-creator of the beautiful Lenormand Revolution deck) has been there for me from the beginning, helping me along with information and suggestions throughout the design process.
This Majors-only version of the deck will be limited to 300 copies total. It will be printed by J.S. McCarthy Printers in Augusta, Maine on 16 pt card stock, plus a gloss UV coating. The paper is FSC certified and 55% recycled. All production will be done using 100 % wind power.
The cards are 3" wide by 5" tall. They will wrapped in a "belly band" printed with a matching design on 80# CV paper and will be available either separately or as part of a signed and numbered set including the novel (published as a 7" X 9" trade paperback).
The next few images are of printed proofs provided to me by the printer, including a mock-up of the complete finished deck.
The Devil card in this Majors-only deck was specifically designed to compliment the book. For that reason, this card will only be available with the Majors deck; a different design for this card will be used in the full deck next year.
I have spent many months working on the design of these Major Arcana cards. Now that they are complete, all that's needed is to raise the money for the printing. As a "backer" of this project, you'll essentially be pre-ordering your copy of the deck. I hope to sell enough copies in advance to make the printing possible. Copies of the novel, of the card & novel set, and of my previously-published book projects will also be made available if you REALLY want to help out an independent writer, cartoonist and designer!

Risks and challenges
All of the cards are completed. The deck is just about ready to go (I need only to design the wrapper). The printer has provided me with terrific proofs on the actual stock that will be used. The biggest challenge is simply raising the money to make it happen. There are things that can always go wrong to cause a delay in any large printing project, but the printer that I am working with is an established, quality firm well known in the business. Post-production, the challenge will be to get all the decks in the mail on time... but I've been pretty conservative about the dates, and am confident these goals can be met.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
