Study Woodworking in Japan!

The Goal

Currently, there are several places to learn woodworking in Japan; however, they are hosted in Japanese. Over the past few months, I have learned that there are many people who wish to study in Japan but are held back because of the language barrier. Due to this, many are hesitant to pursue their dreams of studying woodworking in Japan.

I believe it is a waste for people to give up on thoroughly learning something they are passionate about just because of the language.

So I thought about it… and realised the answer to this big barrier is to build a school catered for English speakers where they can learn these woodworking skills.

Why pursue this?

I have always wanted to share this wonderful woodworking world with like-minded people from all over the world. For the last six months, I have started sharing Japanese woodworking information through videos and photos. Because of the huge amount of interest, I started organizing one-day workshops for people visiting Kyoto, letting them experience Japanese woodworking tools.

The amount of interest shown in Japanese woodworking was beyond what I expected. I was honestly surprised, but I am really delighted.

About the Teacher

My name is Takami Kawai and I'm a traditional Japanese carpenter and architect with over 16 years of experience in sustainable design and construction. As much as conditions allow, I enjoy using traditional Japanese techniques. My experience includes working for the world renown, Ise Jingu Grand Shrine. I have also hosted numerous presentations on traditional Japanese woodworking. Now, I run a small construction firm, Suikoushya, which specializes in the restoration of traditional Japanese houses.

For more information on what I do, please check: Instagram and Facebook

What to expect?

This school will be conducted in English where you will learn intensively about traditional Japanese woodworking. It will be taught directly by an active Japanese carpenter. An English speaking carpenter will also be at hand to help interpret.

By learning about Japanese traditional woodworking with me, you can discover the charms and depth of the Japanese woodworking culture. With these attained skills, working with wood becomes an endless possibility.

What are the funds for?

The place currently used for teaching is our place of daily work, which is too small for students to learn in. In order to share this wonderful world with many more people, a bigger learning place is needed. I want to share the amazing woodworking world with more people.

The funds raised will be used to cover the material and building costs of the new learning space. The land to build the building has been decided.

Together with woodworkers from all over the world, I would like to share the world of Japanese woodworking! I would be happy if you could support us!
