About this project
About I Know Where Your Cat Lives
Welcome to the today's internet—you can buy anything, every website is tracking your every move, and anywhere you look you find videos and images of cats. Currently, there are 15 million images tagged with the word "cat" on public image hosting sites, and daily thousands more are uploaded from unlimited positions on the globe.
"I Know Where Your Cat Lives" iknowwhereyourcatlives.com is a data experiment that visualizes a sample of 1 million public pics of cats on a world map, locating them by the latitude and longitude coordinates embedded in their metadata. The cats were accessed via publicly available APIs provided by popular photo sharing websites. The photos were then run through various clustering algorithms using a supercomputer at Florida State University in order to represent the enormity of the data source.
This project explores two uses of the internet: the sociable and humorous appreciation of domesticated felines, and the status quo of personal data usage by startups and international megacorps who are riding the wave of decreased privacy for all. This website doesn't visualize all of the cats on the net, only the ones that allow you to track where their owners have been.
Thanks for letting us be your cat fan headquarters; keep the pictures coming.

Why a Kickstarter?
Hosting is expensive. Consider these facts about web hosting costs for popular sites:
Facebook spent ~ $60 million in 2009 on web hosting costs
- Google spent $2.3 billion on a new data center in 2008
- Microsoft spends $500 million on each new data center they build
Data for recent years is not available yet, but figures are expected to rise.
With 32GB of cat data we are expecting huge amounts of traffic. While we’re no Facebook, one million cats multiplied by tens of thousands of hits a day requires a beefy server to answer all those requests. Who doesn't love cats?
The project is essentially complete. We want everyone to see the site but it requires a fast server and lots of bandwidth. So we are launching this project and the kickstarter at the same time in order to fund the first year of web hosting. We're asking for your help in paying for one year so we can share it with the world.

The available space for each $500+ reward is 360 x 130 pixels (see below). This is a "public media support" style placement. Meaning, this is not space for an advertisement rather a high-visibility logo placement and link. The FAQ is very popular because it contains additional information about the project. Order of placement will be determined by donation amount. You are welcome to create a logo file or I can make it from a high resolution or vector image. No animations or flash ads will be accepted.
