About
Cuban artists are leading a wave of economic, social and cultural change that is gripping Cuba. This is a project started and run by an independent artist, Kadir Lopez Nieves. He and his friends are on a mission to restore the antique neon signs of the city and to create a new illuminated skyline. We want you to join us in this wonderful effort!
After close to sixty years in the dark due to power shortages and a reduced ability to light the city, Havana is stirring again and showing signs of new life in its public realm and private initiatives. Cuba is now engaged with the United States. Americans are visiting in droves and making friends with Cubans in unprecedented ways. This is an artist project that is an example of public culture providing the visual clues that will create a vibrant private sector, create jobs, make Cubans see progress and strengthen its historic past.
Después de cerca de sesenta años en la oscuridad debido a la escasez de energía y una disminución de la capacidad para iluminar la ciudad, La Habana se agita de nuevo y mostrar signos de vida nueva en su ámbito público y la iniciativa privada. Cuba se comunica con los Estados Unidos. Los estadounidenses asisten en masa para ser amigos con los cubanos de una manera sin precedentes. Este proyecto es un ejemplo de la cultura pública que proporciona las pistas visuales que va a crear un sector privado dinámico, generen empleos y cubanos ven el progreso y mantengan su pasado histórico.
Havana was once graced by thousands of electric signs on theaters, stores, hotels and nightclubs. It was a city of lights that rivaled even Paris in the 1950s. Neon and incandescent signs heralded the urban chic of the city before the practice fell into disfavor in the early 1960s and they slowly evaporated from the city’s skyline. The politically incorrect implications of the fabulous signage, as well as the maintenance required in the harsh, tropical climate propelled the signs into decay. Today, Havana is a city with a new vigor and energy that is quickly reclaiming old traditions and breathing new life into the electric signs that are the architectural equivalent of the rolling stock of antique American cars the city’s streets.
La Habana una vez fue agraciado por miles de letrerros eléctricss en teatros, tiendas, hoteles y discotecas. Era una ciudad de las luces que rivalizaban incluso París en la década de 1950. Neón y signos incandescentes anunciaron la elegancia urbana de la ciudad antes de la práctica cayó en desuso a principios de 1960 y se evapora lentamente del horizonte de la ciudad. Las implicaciones incorrectas de otros tiempos así como el mantenimiento requerido en el duro clima, tropical propulsaron los luminicos fabulosos en decadencia. Kadir's studio has become the first full service neon shop in private hands in Havana in many years, we have all the tubes, glass, torches and ladders to get this job done. We have the best young neon benders on the island and we are already doing it! We have already restored ten+ signs! With your help we will light us the whole city! This project is conducted by a private citizen artist and it aims at improving the private sector, increase civil society and benefit the Cuban people directly with an improved public realm. We have already created a small independent business and four private sector jobs. Your help will allow us to expand this work
Ya estamos trabajando y listos con el primer taller de neón en servicio completo en manos privadas en La Habana, tenemos todos los tubos, vidrio, antorchas y escaleras que hacer este trabajo. Tenemos los mejores dobladores de neón jóvenes de la isla y que ya estamos haciendo! Ya hemos restaurado quince luminicos+! Con su ayuda, nosotros encenderemos toda la ciudad! Este proyecto se lleva a cabo por un artista ciudadano privado y que tiene por objeto mejorar el sector privado, la sociedad civil y aumentar beneficiar directamente al pueblo cubano con un mejor de dominio público. Ya hemos creado una pequeña empresa independiente y cuatro puestos de trabajo del sector privado.

Although it is a lot easier to work in Cuba because of the lifting of some restrictions for Americans to connect with the island, it is still very difficult to carry out a project of this magnitude there. But we are experienced entrepreneurs and artists. We are a unique group of partners who posses all of the necessary skills and experience in working in the USA and Cuba. We are experts in sign creation, historic neon sign restoration, government relations, civic processes, planning, distribution, marketing, sales, business administration, tourism planning and public relations to address the needs of our project. This is a team that is supporting Kadir Lopez in his public practice.

Read more about our founder. Kadir Lopez Nieves is one of Havana's most interesting and successful artists. After many years of working in his studio with signs and neon he decided to move out into the community to provide the benefits of his work to the everyday people of Havana. Fascinated by the city's stock of rusting and aging public signage created a new public practice to start restoring these beauties for all the residents of the City. This is a perfect example of how art can change the world for the better. One sign at a time!

Kadir López Nieves es uno de los artistas más interesantes y exitosos de La Habana. Después de muchos años de trabajo en su estudio con signos de neón y decide trasladarse a la comunidad para proporcionar los beneficios de su trabajo a la gente de todos los días de La Habana. Fascinado por la oxidación social de la ciudad y el envejecimiento de señalización pública creó una nueva práctica pública para iniciar la restauración de estas bellezas para todos los residentes de la ciudad. Risks and challenges
Although we are very accomplished regarding working in Cuba and already have restored over 15 signs, we know that anything can happen in Cuba and US relations that would make it more difficult to fix more signs. However we have been working on this for over two years and see an increasing acceptance by the citizens on the street so we do not expect this work to stop.
