Fast-paced multiplayer FPS combat meets tactical MOBA inspired magic... with wizards!
About this project
The campaign may be over but development soldiers on! Please lend Grimoire your support by purchasing the game through our website (and pick up some exclusive rewards while you're at it)!
Grimoire is a multiplayer mage FPS with MOBA-style abilities that puts the player in control of devastating magic. Deep spell mechanics enhance classic FPS gameplay with the tactics and trickery unique to magical battles. Explore a dark medieval world through three exciting game modes that put a new twist on old favorites. Fight for territory, prestige, and your very survival. Scorch your enemies, vanish into thin air, or turn to stone with dozens of powerful spells at your fingertips!
Grimoire has been in development for just under a year. Our team of four experienced developers is ready to take it to the next level with your support on Kickstarter. We're crafting a truly unique experience -- not offered by any AAA studios right now -- and we need your help to make it a reality!
- Exciting magical combat in first and third person
- Ten powerful wizard classes that can be customized with a variety of spells to evade and disrupt opponents
- Three primary game modes: PvP Conquest, Arena, and a unique co-op mode, Safeguard
- Explore an incredible medieval world that stretches from the dizzying heights of magical towers to the cavernous depths of lost civilizations
We're calling the demo our “Combat Preview”. It is a way for us to show off Grimoire’s classes without incurring costly server fees for multiplayer hosting. The Combat Preview is a class showcase that features five of the ten magic schools included in Grimoire. We've made an engaging single player combat experience with assets from our multiplayer modes in just a few short weeks. With your support -- imagine what we can create in a few months.

Grimoire has been in a playable alpha state for months. Each playtest we bring something new to the table including classes, maps, and spell effects. Over the course of development testers have grown into fans, returning to play over and over again. Their dedication along with the support of many others who share our excitement for Grimoire has convinced us the game is ready for a larger audience and Kickstarter. Choosing to back us now means access to alpha tests scheduled to begin before this campaign has even ended. You don’t have to wait and hope that a game will exist eventually, Grimoire is ready to be played now!
One of the greatest challenges has been creating maps, characters, and spells with a budget of hundreds (not thousands) of dollars. With your support we plan to ramp up development and complete Grimoire with a higher degree of quality than we could ever hope to achieve by ourselves.
The northern land of Aesir is home to two great houses locked in bitter struggle. The fate of the Empire will be decided by the House that wields the power of the Grimoire. In ages past use of the Grimoire heralded the dawn of magic, called forth hosts of mythical creatures, and brought a vast civilization to ruin. Now, the Grimoire’s power is coveted by House Magnus, who was entrusted to guard its secrets, and House Validus, who intends to use its power to bring forth a new age. Their feuds spills blood in the streets while a yet-unseen power rises in the south...
War approaches. An epic conflict not only for power, but for survival.
Choose from one of ten wizard classes and wield four primary spells in deadly magical battles. Pick two additional abilities from a shared pool of spells that range from teleportation to a powerful kinetic blast that sends foes flying. Mix in passive abilities that increase your tactical options and you have a recipe for combat befitting a student of the Arcane Arts.
Many of our spells are inspired by our favorite MOBA games like DOTA 2 and League of Legends. Grimoire's FPS spin on these strategic spells creates fast paced tactical combat you won't find anywhere else. Grimoire is not a game of instant damage and unavoidable death. Every spell has a counter… if you’re ready for it!
Game Modes
Conquest - Magnus and Validus battle over control of key sources of magical energy known as ley-lines. The longer the ley-lines are held the more energy is gained including a large influx of power if one house can manage to take total control of an area. Destructible objects can reveal new territory or bring the environment crashing down on your enemies. Inspired by games like Day of Defeat, the Battlefield series, and Team Fortress 2; Conquest is a territorial battle that features large (8v8) teams.
Arena - Small groups of wizards (3v3 - 5v5) face off in tight quarters where death is final. In the arena the two houses compete in sanctioned slaughter for glory and the right to claim ancient weapons of incredible power. The bold player who captures one of these artifacts must spend time attuning to its nature, but once attuned their magical prowess will increase dramatically and assure their house’s victory. Unfortunately, attunement is a complex process that afflicts Wizards with negative effects. Will you risk taking hold of an artifact or will you face your enemies head on? Inspired by Counterstrike’s classic mode, arena is competitive combat that demands exceptional teamwork.
Safeguard - This cooperative mode pits a few powerful wizards against legions of vile creatures. The southern kingdom has risen and you’re one of the few wizards left capable of defending the empire. The city is your battleground and its people are in peril. Will you save the citizens trapped in the tavern or will you topple the building to crush the horde? Victory is measured not just in survival, but in how much of the city you can manage to save. A special in-match progression system, quest objectives, and procedural event-driven enemy attacks ensure this mode will have enough depth to satiate even the most diehard co-op fans.
Each class in Grimoire brings a unique style of spells.
Fire - Use magic to engulf areas in unquenchable fire. Throw flame, hurl fireballs, launch chunks of magma, and rain down meteors on any who stand in your way. Master your spells and launch yourself on a wave of super-heated air (rocket jump!).
Lighting - Wield deadly lightning at long range. Electrify nearby opponents, send lightning from your fingertips, call bolts down from the sky, and summon a powerful orb of lightning to rip apart your enemies. Mark opponents with each successful attack, magically revealing their location- even through solid walls.
Ice - Command Ice magic to ensnare enemies in frost. Slice rivals with shards of ice, launch forking ice bolts, flash freeze the earth, and harass opponents with chilling storms. Create a path of ice with each successful attack to increase your speed.
Earth - Harness earth magic to crush nearby opponents. Throw dense clusters of stone, hurl massive boulders, detonate blinding sandstone, and summon a powerful golem to pulverize adversaries. Wear a mantle of earth that reduces the damage you take and bring the fight to your enemies.
Nature - Summon the power of nature to heal friends and hinder foes. Rapidly attack with thorns, heal with nature’s energy, call forth a deadly wisp, and surround yourself and allies with healing spirits. Return to nature when badly wounded by shifting into an animal form -- escaping death to fight again.
FIVE more wizards will be revealed in the future!
Most of the art in the current Alpha build is placeholder. A significant portion of funding will ensure the look of Grimoire's world, people, and magic will be as gripping and memorable as it’s combat system.
The art direction for Grimoire is about bringing legends to life. Soaring towers that brush the sky, hulking taverns fit for viking kings, and vast stretches of wilderness comprise the lands of Aesir. Its people are descended from nomads and adventurers, and the influences of Nordic and Gypsy cultures can clearly be seen in their clothing and architecture.
Most importantly, the magic of Grimoire is distinct with rich colors that stand out from the environments. From the liquid flame of a fireball to the creeping frost of icestorm, great care will be taken to make magic beautiful-yet-deadly.
Grimoire’s dark fantasy world would not be complete without the help of Marcus Zuhr, our wonderful composer. With over 40 credits in film and games including Pirates of the Caribbean Online, Cradle, and many more; Marcus is a seasoned professional. Still need convincing?
With your help Marcus will lend his considerable talent to Grimoire and if we achieve some stretch goals it will mean more dark fantasy music for everyone!
Grimoire has been built with practically no budget to speak of. Much of the art and sound for the Combat Preview and alpha build were created by the open source community and generous donations from people who believe in Grimoire.
The amount we're asking for is just enough for us to get licensing, servers, high quality art, and memorable music into the game for a PC release. Every dollar will be used to improve the core experience.

Risks and challenges
While confident we can reach the goals we've set, unforeseen events and disaster put the best laid plans to waste. We've done our best to prevent disaster by reviewing technical challenges regarding everything from complex spell mechanics to Steam integration. In addition, we have created playable prototypes for every game mode in Grimoire to ensure we can deliver on our promises.
Our small team is fortunate to have two programmers, including one whom is a former Blizzard Entertainment engineer specialized in testing. This skill-set will help us meet the ambitious goals we've set including deep game modes and unique classes without sacrificing a smooth frame rate. Our most significant risk is that we will not have the resources to make every aspect of Grimoire as good as we want it to be. On this point, we need YOUR help!
We’ll be transparent about the systems we add to the game and highly value input from the community in regards to what we should focus on. This means being engaged with our fans; which can (understandably) slow development. Our goal is not to rush Grimoire out, but to create an outstanding and memorable mage FPS.
To make this possible we are all working on Grimoire full time and living off our savings (and the good graces of family). We’re lucky to have people that believe in us as much as we believe in Grimoire, and it is our sincerest hope that you will join us on this journey.

Grimoire is multiplayer for a couple reasons. Our team is passionate about multiplayer games and we wanted to make a unique contribution to the FPS genre. The other big reason is that single player 3D games tend to require a great deal of art assets. With the level of quality we wanted for Grimoire and limited access to 3D models we opted to make a game that best suited the resources we had available. That said Safeguard, our co-op mode, will give players the option of playing solo (with friendly AI or difficulty tuning).

The demo we’re calling our Combat Preview is single player because we needed a way of guaranteeing everyone could try Grimoire. It also allows people with limited connectivity to the internet to try the game concept without needing to worry about ping to our test server. We will also be opening up multiplayer testing to people who back at the Developer Playtest alpha during the Kickstarter.

Back us! The only way to get guaranteed access to Grimoire in the coming month is to back Grimoire at the “Developer Playtest” level. We’ll invite you to play with us, collect your feedback, and together we’ll make Grimoire an unforgettable game. In addition, anyone eligible for a copy of the game will get beta access through Steam.

Grimoire will still get finished even if it is not funded. However, the level of content and quality we can offer with our initial release will suffer.
-
Beta starts when Grimoire has been integrated into Steam’s system. All backers who are eligible to receive a copy of the game will receive an invite to the beta.
