The Other Side is a queer paranormal romance comic anthology. It will be a 200 page long, black and white, soft-bound book, featuring 19 gorgeous stories by 24 creators. It showcases a wide variety of styles, mediums, and approaches to the genre.
Each story delivers on a promise: bring one new story about unambiguously queer characters in love and paranormality into the world. The book is carefully curated and thoughtfully edited, with beautiful artwork throughout.
The Other Side Anthology is co-edited by anthology veterans Melanie Gillman and Kori Michele Handwerker. It will be printed in the United States and contributing artists are paid for their work.
We want to make this book, and we want to do it well and ethically! So we're using kickstarter to raise money to print the book, pay the artists involved, and distribute the finished product! Here's a look at how that money will be distributed across our goal amount:
When we've met and exceeded that amount, we can start increasing our contributors' page rates AND enhancing the book! Everybody wins!
We also want the world to know that the book's content is complete -- it’s ready to print! As soon as we fund and the money from the kickstarter reaches us, we can start printing and get those books to YOU! No waiting for art to be finished or compiled. It's ready to get out there and haunt the bookshelves of the world!
The book's cover has been illustrated by the magnificent Mildred Louis:
And we're also producing a kickstarter-exclusive bookplate, illustrated by Blue Delliquanti (and at higher backer levels, the editors will sketch on it for you!)

What are we doing if we make more money then we ask for? We're keeping it simple: We add sparkles to the book, and pay our contributors even more money!
- $25,000: We add foil stamping to the cover!
- $28,000: Contributors get another $5 per page, for a $55 page rate
- $33,000: Contributors get another $5 per page, for a $60 page rate
...and so on with a $5/page increase for every $5,000 above! (The cover artist and book designer get bonuses too!) Should we absolutely blast through these goals, we have some other goals to consider, but for the most part, we just want to keep paying our contributors more and more for their fantastic work!
I thought you'd never ask!
We would like to thank the predecessors that set the standard and paved the way for a book like ours to happen: C. Spike Trotman of Iron Circus Comics, and Sfé R Monster and Taneka Stotts, creators of the Beyond Anthology.
Additional thanks to Paul Tuttle Starr for composing the music for our Kickstarter video. The video's art and animation was done by Melanie Gillman.
Risks and challenges
We've been on the contributing end of quite a few comic anthology kickstarters, and we both have lots of self-publishing experience, so we are well versed in all the ways things can go wrong. But rest assured, we've considered and contemplated them all.
We've budgeted generously and don't anticipate running into any problems with costs or shipping. We've gotten confirmed quotes for all components of the book and confirmed shipping prices as of this month.
Since all the content is already done and a professional designer is constructing the print file and PDFs, there shouldn't be any pre-press delays. With that aside, this biggest risk is print delays. Sometimes this is out of our hands, especially if we unlock a lot of enhancements to the book. But in the event that there will be a delay in delivering your books to you, you will be kept absolutely informed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
