Bring your projects to life

Upgrade to color 3D printing with the first low-cost, quad extruder.

Multistruder gives you the freedom to integrate text, graphics, and color into your 3D prints. 

Experiment with Materials

The production version of Multistruder will give you independent temperature control on each nozzle.  This versatility will let you print up to four different types plastics at a time.

How does it work?

Multistruder is a quad FDM extruder.  Load it up with four different plastic filaments and hit print.  

While most 3d printers use single or dual extruders, Multistruder utilizes four print heads that can extrude different plastics at different temperatures- all during one print.

Goals

My goal is to create the best, most affordable multi-filament extruders. The flagship quad drive model is designed to be small, efficient, cost- effective and reliable.  

Rewards

Make sure you pick the reward package that matches your printer.  The rewards have been broken into four packages:

  • The $262 package is a complete Multistruder kit.  This includes the hot end, Arduino control board, relay shield, stepper motor, bearings and everything else you will need to upgrade your printer to quad printing.
  • For $240 you get everything from the $262 kit above except the Arduino board.
  • If you have access to a  printer and want to upgrade to quad printing then the $229 option is perfect.  You print all of the plastic parts and we'll send everything else: complete hot end, stepper motor, relay shield, bearings, Arduino board, and everything else.
  • The $206 is the the same as the $229 package but without the Arduino board.

The $25 sample print is an example of Multistruder's capabilities.  It has yet to be designed, but it will be something functional and small enough to be shipped in an envelope.

Some assembly required

The rewards are shipped as kits that will require assembly.  The website will have videos and instructions for assembling and using your new Multistruder.

Does Multistruder Fit on My Printer?

There are so many printer designs out there, and they seem to change daily.  Making Multistruder work with them all is quite a challenge.   

We have to start somewhere, so initially Mulstistruder will be available to fit Mendel Prusa i1, i2, and i3 style printers.  It is also available for Mendel Max.  

Multistruder will fit most printers with horizontal rails spaced between 50mm and 100mm apart.  Please see below to help you decide if Multistruder will fit your printer.  

Weight

A complete Multistruder weighs in at 2 pounds which is a little heavier than Dual Stepstruders  According to Makerbot "MK7 is only 0.8 lbs!" and  I don't think they factored in the bearings, sled or a cooling fan into their weight.   

Development

Developing Multistruder has been a personal challenge for over 2 years. The original idea was simple- pack as many extruders into as small a space as possible.  Weight, airflow, reliability, ease of construction, and price all had to be considered to make this project successful.  Everything from the filament drive mechanism to the hot end has been redesigned making it the most unique 3d printer extruder available anywhere.

The prototype in the video is working well, but there are still improvements to be made before production can begin.  

Is Multistruder Open Source?

Not yet, but it definitely will be.  To protect my investment and the integrity of this project, Multistruder's source files will be remain private until development is completed.  The Reprap community has been an amazing resource and the foundation for this project.  The decision to hold off on sharing development was not taken lightly and I hope the community understands.

Electronics

Multistruder may require a separate Arduino board connected via I2C to your current electronics.  The Arduino It is used to control 4 pins on a 24V relay shield.  The relay shields are included with every reward package, but the Arduino boards are optional.

If your current electronics are less than 24V then you will need a separate 24V > 200mA power supply.  A wall wart is fine and can usually be found online for around $12 - $16 US.

Firmware and Slicer

Multistruder is running off of a modified version of Marlin firmware.  Slic3r is used to generate the multi-color gcode.  

The Website

multi-struder.com will go-live before the first batch of extruders ship. It will have a store to purchase Multistruder and filiment.  The site will also have links to video instructions for assembling, tuning and printing with your Multistruder.

Risks and challenges

There is still a long road ahead. The engineering has to be finalized for production, manufacturers need time to produce parts, kits will have to be packaged and shipped- the list goes on and on.

My goal is to begin shipping in March of 2015. I am basing the current costing off of the quotes I have received. I will update Kickstarter with every milestone and challenge as they come.
