Step right up, my lords and ladies, and prepare to be mystified by the most bizarre, the most exotic, the most fantastic sights you have ever yet to behold! Step behind this curtain—for the merest, tiniest contribution—and your world will be changed forever! For this is the Carnival of Monsters, and it offers a world of wonders!
AMIGO Spiel + Freizeit GmbH invites you to experience Richard Garfield’s Carnival of Monsters, a new game from the genius behind such hits as Magic: The Gathering, RoboRally, and King of Tokyo.
Garfield’s most recent design, this game challenges you to explore exotic, fantastic lands and collect extraordinary monsters to display in your carnival, earning the adoration of the crowd and the fame that only a true carnival master can enjoy. Because we believe that great games deserve great art, we have teamed up with some of the most talented artists in the world of gaming today to make Richard Garfield’s Carnival of Monsters a celebration not only of great game design, but of great game art as well.
But this magnificent creation won’t be possible without help from you. By backing this campaign, you can help AMIGO and this pool of talented artists make this project a reality. Explore the sample artwork below, learn more about the game and the artists, then join us by backing this project.
Together, we can make Richard Garfield’s Carnival of Monsters the magnificently beautiful game that we know it can be.
While we don´t think that Richard needs a big introduction, we still feel something would be missing if we did not introduce him properly.
As magnificent as the monsters are, it takes talented artists to really bring them to life. We have gathered this team of brilliant artists. Together, they have illustrated more than 1,000 cards for Richard’s most famous creation, Magic: The Gathering. Most of them were part of that phenomenon from the very beginning, and they are delighted to reunite with Richard to illustrate his latest game project, 25 years later.
Richard Garfield’s Carnival of Monsters combines card drafting and set collecting for a game experience that is at once familiar and refreshingly new. 2 to 5 players begin with a small number of Lands, which they can use to play Monsters. At the beginning of each of the game’s four Seasons, each player is dealt eight cards—which can include more Lands, Monsters, or other cards they might be able to use to improve their carnival. A normal game takes around 45 minutes and we suggest players to be age 10 or older.
At the same time, all players choose one card to keep, passing the rest to their neighbor. You can play your chosen card immediately, or pay one coin to save it for later. Of course, if you can’t play it now, you’ll have to pay to keep it!
Collecting more Land cards allows you to play more and bigger Monsters.
Playing Monsters is the key to scoring points: Every Monster is worth points at the end of the game, and if you play the right kind of Monster in the right Season, you can earn more points and coins during the game.
Staff cards provide a permanent bonus for your carnival, from new ways to earn coins, to Hunters that can protect you from dangerous Monsters!
Events give you a one-time boost.
Secret Goals are kept hidden until the end of the game, when they add surprise points to your score!
The Season ends once all of the cards dealt have been chosen. Now it’s time to deal with those dangerous Monsters you’ve been putting on display!
Fortunately, the King will help out some by sending out his Royal Hunters, but you can’t always rely on them…
You can hire Hunters for your staff…
Or use Nets you have collected—but each Net can only be used once!
If your Monster gets out, the King will be most upset—you’ll have to pay your precious coins to clean up the mess.
Run out of money? No problem! Take out a Loan (or two… or three…). But be careful! Each Loan will cost you victory points at the end of the game. Get too deep in debt, and it won’t matter how magnificent your Monsters are.
After four Seasons, add up your points from the Monsters you have played, the Secret Goals you have completed, and the coins you have left. The player with the most points is hailed as the true Carnival Master!
When this project is fully funded, it will include 104 unique original full-card illustrations, including fabulous monsters, exotic lands, and talented staff members to populate your carnivals. But that is not the end of the campaign! We hope to provide 86 additional individual full-card illustrations so that every monster, land, and staff card has its own unique artwork without any duplication. In order to achieve this accomplishment, we have prepared a number of stretch goals to fund those additional illustrations.
With your help, through this Kickstarter campaign, we will be able to recruit the best artists for the job, presenting an all-new fantasy world in a completely revolutionary way.
Let´s have a look at what the different Editions of the game have to offer. Please keep in mind that everything you see here is still a work in progress. After all, we need your help to make this game as beautiful as we can.

Over 35 Years of Simply Great Games!
AMIGO, the game publishing company, first saw the light of day in 1980. Successful distribution deals established AMIGO’s name and enabled it to venture into the world of board games, too. The Dietzenbach-based game publisher has developed a strong second pillar for itself by expanding into the area of licenses and distribution of Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon TCG, Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG and the new Force of Will TCG.
Thanks to the strength of popular card games like 6 nimmt!, Bohnanza and Wizard, AMIGO has practically become synonymous with card games in Germany.
In recent years, the Dietzenbach publisher has focused largely on these very strengths. Classic lines such as Halli Galli, 6 nimmt!, Wizard and Bohnanza have been expanded. Numerous events from years past, like the Wizard and Saboteur championships, as well as Organized Play for trading card games on a national level, continue to enjoy significant success.
Our partner for the production and logistics of this fantastic game is LUDO FACT. LUDO FACT is synonymous for quality in board games.
Here is a short excerpt from their company profile:

Shipping costs are not included within the pledge. We will be charging actual shipping cost via our pledge manager after the Kickstarter concludes. That way we can be as fair as possible to all of you, as we will end up with a lot of different sizes of packages.
We will ship the games and add-ons in bulk to fulfillment centers in Europe and the USA at our expense to keep shipping costs for you as low as possible and reduce customs fees and VAT where possible.
If you want to save yourselves the shipping cost all together: We plan to offer pickup of your pledges both at Gen Con 2018 and Essen Spiel 2018.
Should you wish to have your games shipped to your home, we would like to give you an idea about the roughly estimated shipping costs for a single game. We compiled the following list together with our logistics partner.

Risks and challenges
While we know how to publish boardgames, this is our first Kickstarter and therefore a new experience for us.
Carnival of Monsters is a special project in many ways. We are working with a big team of artists on a huge number of illustrations, for example. We may end up having problems along the way, but we are confident that we will be able to solve any problems thanks to our experience with producing games and our great partners at Ludo Fact.
We have faced our share of unexpected issues in the past, and we are absolutely certain that we will be able to overcome any problems that might come up. We are not too shy to ask for assistance, as we have done frequently in preparation of this campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
