We're Dave and Nick and we are bringing the Hooky to Kickstarter to get it off the ground. Dave designed the Hooky to be an unobtrusive, lightweight keychain that can easily but securely hook onto belt loops and straps.
Materials and Manufacturing
The Hooky comes in two flavors: Aircraft Aluminum and Brass.
The Aluminum offers an incredible weight/strength ratio and it's perfectly suited for folks who want to keep their personal gear light. The Aluminum Hooky weighs just .5 oz.
The Brass is a more expensive and heavier metal but Dave and I simply couldn't pass up the feel and classiness that brass brings to the Hooky. Brass Hookys are heavier than the Aluminum, but will age with a nice patina and are more durable.
Both Brass and Aluminum Hookys are 1/8 inch thick, making them extremely low profile and comfortable in pockets.
What's the deal with the Hooky?
Hookys can work for belt loops, pockets and backpacks. Its low profile design makes it comfortable to slide onto your belt loop and into your pocket. The long runway design keeps it from accidentally sliding off.
The Hooky has an integrated flat head bit on it specially designed to fit into coin slot screws. Coin slot screws show up in all sorts of places; tripod plates, automotive upholstery snaps, laptops batteries, thumbscrews etc, etc. Using a flathead screwdriver on these screws will mangle the screw head almost immediately. The Hooky's coin slot tool is flat and does not taper like a screwdriver, so you have a solid lock on the elusive coin slot screw.
Lastly, The Hooky was specifically designed to spin on your finger, because it's fun to spin things on your finger.
The Hooky is not done yet. What you are seeing in this Kickstarter Campaign are functional prototypes. We still need to make minor design improvements to the Hooky and research the best anodizing method for the Aluminum Hooky. What you see in the video is 99% of what the Hooky will look like but we wanted to let you know it will end up changing slightly from what you see here. Once we get successfully funded we are going to:
- Wrap up last minute design improvements
- Purchase metal stock and have the Hookys professionally milled in America
- Research and test the best finishing options for the Aluminum Hooky
- Oversee Hooky production and shipping
- Get a website made
- Hire an accountant so we don't get a visit from the Tax Fairy
- Ship the rewards and Hookys to our fantastic Kickstarter backers
All in all this should take us 60 days from the time we receive Kickstarter funds. We hope to be shipping by early January. As with all large projects, we gave ourselves plenty of room to account for hiccups in production. We don't expect delays, but that may well change. Thanks in advance for understanding.
We want the Hooky to be a real thing that people can enjoy and we want to see more Hooky-ish things happen in the future. Help us start this idea and turn it into a reality.
Sharing on social media is SUPER important. We need your help to spread the word anywhere and everywhere (that is appropriate, places like funerals and weddings are not recommended to share Hooky goodness). Sharing Hooky goodness is easy, you can start by liking us on Facebook.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge will be getting the finishing to look right. Besides that the logistics of shipping is always more complex than one might think.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
