About this project
So we rounded up 52 of the world's most exciting artists, allocated them each a week of the year and asked them to illustrate one news story that broke within their seven days.
The result is an entire illustrated year from 52 unique perspectives. And with the year nearly up, we're collecting every piece into a beautiful hardback book that showcases what illustration can bring to the biggest issues of our time.
To showcase the power of illustration we needed to feature the best illustrators around. Fortunately for us, they were ready and willing to prove what their art form could do. Inside Yellow you'll find original artwork from:
Jean Jullien, Hattie Stewart, Supermundane, Malika Favre, Ian Stevenson, Stanley Chow, Grace Wilson, Pete Fowler, Martin Rowson, Matthew the Horse, Charlotte Mei, Jamie Coe, Chris Riddell, Martina Paukova, Chris SimpsonsArtist and (literally) dozens more of the most exciting artists working today.
Not bad, eh? But that's not all. Yellow is also complimented with interviews and thought pieces from outspoken artists, writers and social commentators.
Yellow has been put together by award-winning editor Daniel Humphry (OFF LIFE, One Thing I Know), art director Steve Leard (OFF LIFE and previously Bloomsbury Publishing), production manager Sarah Hamilton (Penguin Books) and put to paper by legendary Italian print house Lego.
We value good print and no compromise will be made in the making of this book – not on paper, ink, cover or binding. We're trying to stay away from the dirty 'art book' phrase but, trust us, Yellow will look and feel proper tasty. See below specifications for the nitty gritty...
- 260 x 190 mm
- Approx. 144 pages
- Quality matte uncoated paper
- Matte cased cover with emboss and spot UV detailing
Every single person who backs Yellow through Kickstarter will not only receive a copy of the book, but also have their name featured in the acknowledgements page.
Normally publishers leave this for a soppy message to their partner or kids – but we're giving the space to you. Because, to be honest, you're more important to us.
In order to ensure that every artist keeps creative control over their work – and that they receive as large a cut from every sale as possible – we wanted to keep this book independent.
The main reward for backing Yellow is that you'll be the first set of people to receive this book (early December). Given the talent and scale of illustrators in Yellow, we hope that's already enough to get your fingers racing for your wallets. But in case it isn't, and because we want to say a heartfelt thank you anyway, every backer will have their name featured in the acknowledgements section of the book.
For those who are able to help out a little more, we also have 50 first-through-the-door tickets to the Yellow launch party and exhibition in Dalston on 10 December. You'll get to come down before anyone else, meet the artists and enjoy a few free beverages while taking in the Yellow exhibition – long before the doors open to anyone else.
Beyond that we've A3, high quality giclee print of any artwork of your choosing from Yellow, put to paper by the good people at Print Space in Dalston.
For those who in any way care about what we might have to say, and have a spare £250, the creators of Yellow and an artist will come to your studio, office or agency to discuss the project and answer any and all questions about illustration and publishing.
For the collector, we've the Holy Grail: a copy of the book that will be shipped around the world and signed by every artist involved in Yellow. Yours at £500. Double phwoar!
Finally there is the Hired Guns option. Yellow's editor and art director will work with you for the equivalent of two days during 2016 to help develop whatever creative project you’ve got on the cards. Reasonable notice must be given and work can include anything from design and editorial to consultancy or project planning. You'll also receive copies of the book, with your name featured as a patron on the acknowledgements page, and a print for your place of work.

And big thanks to Supermundane, Malika, Jean, Sofia, Charlotte and Martin for putting up with our cameras and questions!
Risks and challenges
We feel confident in saying that there is pretty much no risk in backing Yellow. The team making this book are experienced publishers and the print house is second to none. The project is fully costed and the book is already designed. So - if we reach our Kickstarter target, it's simply a matter of pressing send to print in November.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
