We all need a rock, a solid friend who cheers us up when we're down. Allow me to introduce you to Ishi.
Hi! My name is Akiko and something wonderful happened to me when I was feeling lonely in a new place after a big move in 2009 from NYC to Saigon.
I found a perfect little rock on a beach, and I drew two dots and a line on it, and named it Ishi, which means rock in Japanese.
Ishi didn't look happy, because I wasn't happy.
I started taking pictures of Ishi and putting words to the pictures.
These were feelings I was having at the time in my own life, and after seeing these sad pictures, a friend suggested I put a smile on Ishi's face.
And I did!
And better thoughts and words came out..
I began to smile with Ishi. And I put the collection of Ishi pictures into sets of difficult moments and simple tips to make an encouraging picture book for myself, ISHI, Simple Tips from a Solid Friend.
The book really helped me cheer up on stinky days, so I decided to share it. I also loved the idea of "gift of giving", so I added a page almost like a library card to encourage people to share Ishi with others to continue the passing of happiness and kindness.
Since then, the Ishi book has reached people in Saigon, NYC, Stockholm, Tokyo, North Carolina, LA, Chicago, Florida, Colorado, Toronto, Boston, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Pennsylvania, San Francisco, Seattle, London, Maryland and Vancouver (in that order!).
The Ishi book also made it to the "Kindness Gallery" in Singapore!
And Ishi was recently named finalist under the Adult non-fiction category in the Wishing Shelf Independent Book Awards!
And I would like to continue spreading Ishi to the world and I need your support!
I'm here to raise $7000 to print the 2nd edition of the Ishi book, and the funds will be used for the following:
- Editor for the layout of the book
- Copyright registration for the book
- Purchasing the ISBN (http://www.isbn.org)
- Printing 1000 copies of the hardcover book
- Producing rewards for the awesome backers of Ishi!
- Fulfillment / shipment of the rewards
- Kickstarter and payment processing fees
The 2nd edition of ISHI, Simple Tips from a Solid Friend:
- A 6x8" hardcover book - same as before.
- 4 new sets (4 difficult moments and 4 simple tips = 8 new pages) and 4 updated pictures in the 2nd edition book.
- Total of 40 pages.
Rewards for the backers!
Take a look to the right for a list of rewards, and for those who back Ishi at the $100 level, here are the pictures you get to choose from (you get ONE autographed picture in addition to the rest of the rewards):
With your support, I hope to continue spreading happiness, kindness and smiles with Ishi.
Kickstarter is an ALL - OR - NOTHING crowd-funding platform, so if I don't reach my goal, I get nothing! So, please back Ishi with what you can, and please SHARE SHARE SHARE! Email, Facebook, Twitter, or however you'd like to share!
Thank you so much!

Risks and challenges
After much research, I've decided to use PrintNinja (www.printninja.com), a printer in China for the hardcover books. I have been communicating with their rep in the US who has been answering all of my many questions, and have received several high quality sample books they have printed. I'm very satisfied with the quality of their work and their customer service.
The challenge I saw in completing this project was not with the printing of the book, but with the fulfillment of the books. I am currently living in Toronto, Canada, and shipping is VERY expensive here. I've done my research and budget calculations, and I've decided to have the hardcover books shipped to a fulfillment house in the US (Texas) and have them fulfill the orders.
The postcard size booklet and the 6x8" prints will be printed in Canada and mailed by me since shipping smaller size mail from Canada is reasonable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
