Each issue of Character Design Quarterly will be 104 pages long, and 270 mm x 210 mm in portrait format, with a sturdy but flexible cover.

The first issue is already in production so we can proudly announce that it will feature instructive tutorials by Max Grecke, Shaun Bryant, Simone Grünewald, and Brett Bean. We also have interviews with the creative people behind the multi-award-winning animation studio Blue Zoo, and up-and-coming character designer Amanda Jolly who talks about her exciting career working for companies including Warner Animation Group and Disney TVA. Get top tips from the likes of Loish, Randy Bishop and many more besides, plus learn about the creation of the first issue's amazing cover image by CreatureBox!

With such a formidable first issue we are already making plans for the content of the second issue to ensure that all issues are of the same excellent quality. If you have any suggestions for artists you would like to see in future issues please let us know by sending us a message or leaving a comment, we’d love to hear from you!

We want Character Design Quarterly to be consistent and for the content to always be of a high quality, so new issues will be released four times a year, giving us time to get each one just right. After the first issue, which will ship in July 2017, new issues will be released at regular three-month intervals in September, December, March and June.

Each issue will be priced at £11 (shipping not included) and a one-year subscription will cost £35 (shipping not included). We have researched other magazines of this quality and feel that this is an appropriate price which is affordable. This price will enable us to continue making the magazine in the future and ensure that we can bring you tutorials and insights from the best artists in the world.

Character Design Quarterly is the creation of the small creative team at 3dtotal Publishing. 3dtotal Publishing is an independent publisher specializing in inspirational and educational resources for artists. With extensive experience in producing high-quality books, educational resources, and digital magazines we recently branched into creating print magazines with the successful launch of GRAPHITE magazine in 2016. We would like to thank everyone who has given us advice and support while we have been putting Character Design Quarterly together, including Auguste Dupin at Character Design References, and of course all the artists who have contributed to the magazine so far! Your enthusiasm for the project has given us confidence that the magazine will be the refreshing and engaging resource for artists which we are hoping to create.

The print magazine market is highly competitive, and although we are confident in the quality and purpose of Character Design Quarterly, by launching the magazine through Kickstarter we can start off with a strong subscriber base, which will help CDQ to continue in the future.

Kickstarter also offers us the opportunity to hear directly from you about what you would like to be included in the magazine and which artists you would like to see featured. Therefore, if you have any ideas or suggestions for what you would like to see on the pages of future issues, or there are any artists you would like us to feature, please just leave us a comment or message. We will do our best to include as many of your suggestions as possible!

Kickstarter is a worldwide crowd-funding platform for artists and their creative projects. By backing a project on Kickstarter you get to be a part of bringing a new initiative to life and you also get the chance to receive exclusive rewards. Unlike other crowd-funding sites Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, so backers will only be charged if the project meets its funding goal. If you are new to Kickstarter or you are unsure of how it works you can find more information on Kickstarter’s help center.

Risks and challenges

As work on issue 01 has already reached an advanced stage and work on issue 02 is already afoot we are confident that we can supply your rewards on time, and that we will be able to maintain the high quality of issue 01 in future issues. The main challenge with this project comes down to how quickly we can ship your rewards once they have been printed and arrive at our studio. As we are a small team, very high backer numbers could result in a short delay in the time it takes us to package and post each reward. We will however do everything we can to keep this to a minimum and we will post regular updates to keep you all informed.
