Join Urban Roots in a kickstarter to improve and expand our community market! We would love to have YOU shop here and we are setting out to continue building a community market that is both friendly to individuals of varying backgrounds and supportive of the kitchen cultures of our neighbors and community. We realize to meet our goals, we need more -- more product, more refrigeration and storage, and an improved customer experience so that we can better serve you.
By supporting this Kickstarter, you will be investing in the third iteration of the Urban Roots Community Market, where we will bring to life something that Grand Rapids is lacking: a market where you can buy produce and whole foods that will not only nourish your body, but at the same time support local farmers and food organizations (including Urban Roots!) to contribute to a fair food ecosystem in West Michigan.
The Urban Roots Community Market is more than just a farm-stand. It is a place where we provide our neighbors and community with healthy, fresh, affordable, local (where possible) whole foods. Along with the produce grown on the Urban Roots Community Farm, we also provide additional local produce, kitchen staple items, and bulk foods.
We are excited to be adopting a “Membership Model”, where as an investment into what we are doing and to ensure the success of our endeavors, individuals can purchase an annual $50 Community Market Membership (residents of the Madison neighborhood will receive a free membership)*. Shopping membership may be shared with your household. Membership perks include:
- Weekly updates on produce through a newsletter
- Input on our products and bulk goods
- Access to membership gatherings and parties
- Purchase your food near at-cost prices
- Gain access to Members-only deals and promotions
- Receive a reusable Urban Roots Community Market shopping bag
- Invest your money into the community and support a nonprofit that is dedicated to bringing food education and security to Grand Rapids
*Non-members are still welcome to shop at the Community Market with a small fee added to their total to cover food costs.
What is my money funding?
Our current funding does not cover the amount needed to make the necessary changes to transform the market to a place where YOU would want to shop.
We need the support of this Kickstarter to upgrade our space into a living and thriving food ecosystem. These are a few things that would go a long way towards our goal:
- Expanded products - we want to increase our current 150 products to 450!
- New flooring - replace our stained and aged carpet with food-grade hard floor
- New shelving, refrigeration, and storage - for our 300 new products!
- More signage and display - to add to a pleasing customer experience
- Materials to build Community Classes - so we can educate the community with free cooking classes
And stretch goals: if we make it past $15,000:
- Air Conditioning to help our food products last and to keep shoppers happy and cool in the Summer
- A built-in sound system to improve the overall shopping experience
Because all of our backers are investing in our efforts to create a completely unique concept, we invite you to join us at a Kickstarter Party when we finish renovations to sign the wall, enjoy delicious farm-to-table food and celebrate our community of collaboration! More information will be available upon your support.
We are a 3/4 acre community farm, market, and education center located in the heart of the Madison neighborhood in Southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our variety of programs bring our mission of cultivating healthy communities to life by connecting people of all ages and backgrounds to the soil, and to the table. We set roots in Madison in 2016, and have been growing, educating, and eating delicious food with our neighbors and community since.
The market was originally formed in 2017 as a way to provide affordable and fresh local produce grown on the Urban Roots Community Farm to our neighbors. Our neighbors have historically had little access to fresh food nearby. We soon found that our fresh produce must be coupled with additional kitchen staples (like beans and grains), and education on cooking and eating healthy to empower shoppers to prepare their own nourishing food. This motivated us to have a grand re-opening in September 2018. What we built was a combination of three things: a farm stand, a community cooperative, and a retail store. It was small, but promising.

Risks and challenges
We recognize that our goal--a cross between a farm-stand, a community cooperative, and a retail store--is unprecedented in Grand Rapids. Our pilot model will have no shortage of learning curves.
As Urban Roots has been doing since its inception, we are are fully prepared to adapt and mold to what best empowers our community. We will be encouraging members to give feedback to become the best model we can. We ask that as an investment into our work, backers join in a continued conversation towards a thriving market and a REAL FAIR FOOD ecosystem.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
