With an eye toward ocean conservation and beautiful bikinis, two Maui businesswomen are planning to launch a high-fashion swimwear line they hope will help protect the environment. Kelley Chapman and Anna Lieding own Manakai Swimwear based out of Maui, Hawaii. In re-branding and re-designing the products the two plan to transform their manufacturing to focus on using recycled materials and sustainable manufacturing.
Having worked on the ocean and in the swimwear industry for years the duo decided to revamp their company into something that can be more impactful. Upon learning how detrimental traditional fashion manufacturing methods were they decided to create a swimwear line that provided the option for customers to buy bikinis that are actually preventing plastics from getting into and removing plastics from the ocean. They had tickets booked for manufacturing in traditional methods using recycled material, but took a step back when they realized that they could go the extra mile and manufacture sustainably.
With Manakai Swimwear they are also creating a brand that connects women together, and empowers women to know that we are all beautiful, no matter what color, size, shape. Owners Kelley and Anna are doing this by featuring unique brand ambassadors, community outreach and involvement, and keeping true to their vision of promoting raw, free, and strong women.
Why the world needs recycled and sustainable swimwear:
At this point in time there is enough plastic in the world that there is absolutely no need to create any more. We can recycle plastic into jet fuel, we can recycle plastic into furniture, we can recycle plastic into bikinis! Although we are hitting just a small portion of the consumer market with recycled and sustainable swimwear, it is taking the first step that makes all the difference. You can actually make a huge impact by purchasing a Manakai Swimwear bikini because you will essentially be removing plastic from the ocean, supporting manufacturing facilities that care for their environment and the wellbeing of their employees. The best part is that you will not be sacrificing the integrity and quality of your swimwear by doing so.
How we do it:
Manakai Swimwear has sourced recycled polyester made from pre- and post-consumer plastic. Pre-consumer plastics such as carpet fluff are collected from factories before it finds its way into the ocean; post-consumer plastics such as fishing nets are collected from reefs and beaches. This plastic is then broken down, made into filaments, and woven into the recycled polyester for your swimsuit.
Manakai Swimwear is also establishing contracts with several facilities around the world that practice sustainable manufacturing.
They focus on practices such as:
- Powering their facilities with solar energy
- Reducing waste and byproduct with high-end technology
- Investing in their employees through higher education training
- Giving back to their community through outreach, volunteer programs, and non-profit donations
Manakai Swimwear's collection is young at heart and timeless in sophistication. We believe our wide range of styles are suitable for most women.
All Manakai Swimwear pieces are reversible and stitched with a clean or seamless finish producing a suit that feels comfortable to wear. The material and construction creates a swimsuit that is buttery soft so you will look and feel amazing.
We Need Your Help:
We have the funds for traditional manufacturing methods... but we cannot break the promise that we made to each other: "No matter what the cost, we will stay true to our vision (of a recycled and sustainable swimwear line)." We have the funds for all of our pre-production costs and a portion of our production, but in order to satisfy the minimum order requirements we need to raise a minimum of $15,000.
Risks and challenges
We have done our research and have years of experience in the industry. Our Eco Line will debut in Fall 2016! We have our tech packs (bikini blue print) prepared, we have chosen our colors and prints, we have a distributer of the best recycled polyester, we just need to reach our funding goal so we can fulfill the minimums required for production.
We will constantly keep you informed with progress updates when we have signed our manufacturing contract, bought our tickets, packed up our samples, laptops, bags, have our new samples created, and when production is complete!
Any contribution is greatly appreciated.
Mahalo!!! And Aloha!!!
