Share books, support literacy, and shape community. Help me build a Little Free Library in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Read more

About this project
Did you know that reading with your child on a daily basis is the most important investment you'll make in your child's education? Reading aloud promotes language acquisition and literacy development. These skills are essential in your child's academic success and overall achievement in school. In fact, a good children's book read aloud is "three times richer in vocabulary than conversation" (Trelease, 2009). However, accessing a good book is becoming increasingly difficult due to the federal funding cuts to our Canadian public library system and the rise of the digital e-book.
To encourage literacy and the sharing of books in my community, I want to build and establish a Little Free Library (LFL) here in my neighbourhood of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. Founded by Todd Bol, the Little Free Library (LFL) organization is grassroots initiative to support and encourage literacy and community by building small housing structures (see the image above) to store and share books for anyone to freely access (24 hours a day/7 days a week). No due dates. No fines. What drives the LFL is the motto: "Take a book. Return a book." So, when you've read something extraordinary, donate the book to the LFL for someone else to enjoy!
Although the LFL momentum has reached Canada, there are currently no Little Free Libraries located in the Fraser Valley (including my growing city of Abbotsford, British Columbia). View the map registered LFL here. For many of us, accessing our city library requires a 30-40 minute bus ride each way. LFL's are one alternative to support literacy and share the enjoyment of a good book with those who are unable to drive or use public transport.
1. To build, install, and successfully support one (1) Little Free Library here in my community of Abbotsford, British Columbia.
This is a community and collaborative project! I need your support to make this idea a reality for our city. Your donations will directly contribute to the materials, construction, installation, and start-up of Abbotsford’s Little Free Library.
If you would like to donate to this project, please click on the pledge amount located on the right-hand side of the screen. When prompted, you’ll be asked to enter in your billing information. Your credit card will not be charged unless this project reaches its fundraising goal within the 30-day timeframe that I have established.
Visit our Little Free Library - Abbotsford, British Columbia Facebook page and share it with your friends!
Please note that I do not formally represent the non-profit Little Free Library and that any funds that are raised will go towards this local project and not the parent organization located in USA. Furthermore, any funds raised that exceed my fundraising goal will assist me in the registration costs with the Little Free Library parent organization, the purchasing of books, and maintenance over the life of the structure.
I've put together a list of unique incentives that range from dedicating a book in your name to this limited edition, postcard-size bookmark (that I personally designed for this campaign!) featuring my little reading companion Max.
The following information details the budget that I have established for the project:
Materials (incl. wood, hardware, plexi-glass window, paint): $330.00
Registration with Little Free Library parent organization: $35.00
Total fundraising goal at $365.00
The fine print: If the project is successfully funded, please be aware that 5% of your donation is used to cover Kickstarter fees and an additional 3% + $0.20 CAD per pledge is allocated towards the payment processing fees. Pledges under $10 CAD have a discounted micropledge fee of 5% + $0.05 CAD per pledge. Should you have questions regarding the fees and their structure please direct them to Kickstarter.
I would like to thank my friends, Lisa and Natalia, and family, John and Rob, for providing critical feedback and assisting in the video production of this Kickstarter campaign!
Risks and challenges
One of the risks in installing a Little Free Library is that may be subject to vandalism. To minimize this, we will be installing the structure in a well-lit and visible location. Our challenge is maintaining our Little Free Library over its lifetime. Our winters in BC are long and damp. In order to create a sustainable structure, we’ll be using building materials that are suitable to our climate.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
If you double your fundraising goal, would you be interested in building additional LFL's in Abbotsford?
Absolutely! My philosophy on this is the more the merrier! However, I would need to find another individual who would be interested in serving as the LFL's Steward. This requires looking after the structure over its lifetime. In addition, the LFL Steward would have to be willing to install the structure on or near their property. Attempting to install LFL's on city property has been described as nightmarish.
So with that said, if my fundraising goal reaches $700+ and you live in Abbotsford and are willing to steward a LFL, please contact me!
Thank you for your support and interest in this project! I sincerely appreciate it!
