About the Production
Sarah Saltwick's She Creatures is a play that centers around Pandora, the first woman, who opens a mysterious box and releases a slew of mythological creatures and characters. Through their humorous and heartfelt stories, Pandora witnesses life's struggles and joys and ultimately learns what it is to be human. She Creatures is ripe with design opportunities, from the multifaceted world its characters inhabit, to the fantastical skins in which they live. Your donation will allow us to embody this text in all its glory. This summer, join Barnyard Theatre in an age-old tradition of storytelling by helping us raise these myths and creatures to life from the dust of the barnyard ground.
We Need Your Help
Last year, we were able to produce a stunning season thanks to the help of our Kickstarter donors. You enabled us to produce Meghan Brown's Psyche, one of our most technically ambitious shows to date. This summer, we are asking for your help to produce another original work: Sarah Saltwick's She Creatures. Putting on a show in a barn is no easy feat, particularly since we return it to its original state at the end of each summer! Your donations will directly fund:
- Set materials: furniture, lumber, bolts, rigging hardware.
- Lighting equipment: instruments, lamps, gel, cable.
- Costumes: fabric, makeup kits, dance wear.
- Playwright travel: Sarah Saltwick will be an invaluable part of the rehearsal and production process.
- Rehearsal space: for those 100+ degree afternoons when the Barn won't cut it.
- Port-a-potties: got to have them!
- Lift rental: to install the set, sound and lighting equipment.
- Accessibility ramps: so everyone can enjoy.
- And bug spray…lots of bug spray!
About the Company
Way back in the day, a group of longtime friends returned home from college and decided, “Hey, kids, let’s put on a show!” When the Hunt family generously agreed to host the group in the Historic Schmeiser Barn in the countryside of Yolo County, Barnyard Theatre was born. Since then, the company has grown, but remains a dedicated bunch of friends with a passion for theatre. Each summer since 2004, undaunted by dust and mosquitoes, the company has transformed the working barn into an working theatre. Audience members enjoy seeing a wide variety of original works in this unique theatrical venue.
Risks and challenges
Turning a working barn into a theatrical space presents some unique challenges. We build our stage from nothing every year, which means there's a lot to be done. Also, every year we try to provide food, beverages, bug spray, and bathrooms for our audiences, to create a comfortable environment for them. Since Barnyard Theatre has been producing plays for 10 years, we have the experience to meet these challenges head on and the innovative minds to tackle any problem. As the old saying goes: "The show must go on!"
She Creatures is a beautiful, imaginative play that blends fantasy and mythology with reality. With that in mind, it's very important to us at Barnyard Theatre that we do the playwright's work justice. Our designers have been hard at work creating the look of our show, but building the wonderfully creative costumes and set that we want requires the right resources. Your donations will help us to do She Creatures as it was meant to be done. Thank you so much for all that you give.
