About this project
To Whom It May Concern,
Many years ago, somewhere in the mysterious land of Ohio, the symbols '1' and 'X' were carved into a page of my father's dictionary. We're not talking about a paperback Webster's here, this was a formidable tome of knowledge, an item of such importance and weight that it rested upon a balanced iron stand. Someone childishly decided it would be a good place in which to carve a random number and letter, and then walk away as though nothing had happened. Apparently, that person was me.
If it was me (and I'm still not 100% sure it was, but the others of my family who were there might roll their eyes at this), then why? Probably for the same reason that I derive concentrated joy from the act of marking a sheet of perfectly white bristol board with a fat, black brush stroke. Then, from what seed did the idea of a '1' and an 'X' stem? Perhaps there is an intersection of creativity and chaos within us that we can never be fully aware of, producing strange, inspired ideas. Or I just don't remember.
Flash forward to the year 2014. My usual gig is playing banjo here in Nashville, but between the countless notes I have plucked over the last couple of years, I find that I have also somehow managed to produce four original short comics. It wasn't easy (as any creator of comics reading this can attest), but I had ideas that needed seeing through to their bitter ends. They came from that intersection we talked about, and now they are collected in a volume called '1X'.
The writing and art are completely finished, I am reaching out through Kickstarter for printing and shipping expenses, in hopes of fulfilling my longstanding dream of producing a proper comic book. It will consist of 28 pages, a wrap around cover, a few staples, and a ton of passion for the art form. Art prints, as well as original art will be available as incentives, but I intend to keep this simple: five bucks gets a copy of '1X' shipped to your door, along with my deepest gratitude.
Risks and challenges
I am fully committed to delivering on the promises made in this Kickstarter campaign. That means printing and shipping the comic '1X' to you by the end of September, as well as the art prints. Original art incentives will be completed and shipped by the end of November. Let's do this!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes, if you plan on backing at any of the 3 reward levels, just add an extra three dollars to your pledge to receive an extra copy of '1X'.
