About this project
This year RISD Exposé & 2ndLife are joining forces to move into the heart of downtown Providence. Our new location at 231 Westminster will make both up-cycled art materials & fantastic art and design work created at RISD more available to the Providence community.
The move from a pop up gallery to a year round space is quite a jump & with all of this new time on our hands we will be adding a barrage of events like student film screenings, art parades, constantly rotating art shows, block parties, and workshops to the Exposé repertoire.
You pledge will fund:
1)$5,000+ Furnishing the space (to meet the needs of the rotating gallery and the 2ndLife inventory)
2)5,000+Workstudy( to staff the storefront year-round)
3)5,000 publicity/food/ for gallery openings & events
Additional funding will go to better furnish the space and for opportunities for students to get more involved.
At our new location 2ndLife’s up-cycled materials section will be a more accessible resource, not only for students but also for community members. Students can take home raw supplies, turn them around, and create something that could go right back into the gallery space.
Exposé and 2ndLife will be sharing the storefront, gallery in the front, raw materials in the back (think reverse-mullet). The space will be self-sustaining after the first year. Starting with our grand-opening in September, we plan to bring a new spark to downtown Providence, and draw new connections between the city and RISD!!
If we meet our Kickstarter goal, RISD’s Center for Student Involvement will pledge an additional $30,000 towards making this project happen. With a little bit of luck, a lot of blood sweat and tears & YOUR HELP, we can transform 231 Westminster into a beautiful and all around happening space, ready for rotating gallery shows and events.
SO WHAT IS EXPOSÉ ? ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Exposé is a student-run, student-curated art space, started as a pop-up gallery three years ago as a place for RISD students to show and sell their work. Non-exclusive and ever-flexible, cross disciplinary shows will highlight RISD student work from all departments, we are not all painters after all.
We will be hosting formal "white-wall" gallery shows, raucous art parades & everything in between. There will be fine artwork, zines and comic books, large scale sculpture installations, pottery, jewelry, design work, themed dance parties, local music, student film screenings, alumni shows, and block parties.
2ndLife is a nonprofit, student-run, upcycling program at the Rhode Island School of Design. We collect usable supplies and redistribute them back into the community. Anyone can come by and can take material for $ or in exchange for material donation.
Started in 2004 in as a student lead effort for more sustainable practices, 2ndLife remains one of the most active organizations within the RISD and the Providence community. It was listed as one of the, "Ten Companies who are leading the eco-movement" and a project that the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation would like to see implemented at, "any New Jersey university campus, better yet, how about in any New Jersey town." We have also been sought after for advice by students from Brown University, Pratt College of Art & Design, and most recently the University of California Davis, all of whom want to start similar programs at their schools. Help us serve as the national model for college material-upcycling.
