Braven Arts is a 2D turn-based fantasy RPG, influenced by the 16-bit JRPG classics such as Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and Suikoden planned for release in late 2015. We want to take the backbone of the old classics, whip it up with modernized systems and mechanics, and give players something fresh that they can dig hours into just like we did with the old games.
Before we get into the nitty gritty details of our gameplay systems, here is a quick overview of the major features in Braven Arts.
Now let's jump into the details of the major systems in Braven Arts.
Braven Arts uses the classical turn-based battle system like in FFX, while digging deeper to add more depth to the gameplay with an alterable grid system, similar to that of Mega Man Battle Network.
Battles will take place on 2 sets of 4x4 tiles and integrate strategic elements, such as changing the tile-based battlefield, to lay waste to your foes.
Alter the battlefield to your favor - Abilities will be able to change tiles to different elements (fire, nature, etc) or types (cursed, broken, etc). Synergize abilities with tile types to set up devastating combos. Electrify your enemies by using a lightning spell on a water tile to deal critical damage and stun enemies for a turn.
Objects and summons - Place objects or summons onto the battlefield to aid your party during battles. Mages can summon rock walls to shield allies, or bind elementals onto the field to wreak havoc onto your foes! Assassins can place deadly traps to hinder enemy activity, while engineers can craft turrets and mechs to blast down any opposition!
Movement and positioning - Characters will be able to move to any open tile on their respective side during their turn to adapt to the situation. Avoid harmful tile effects, spread out to avoid AOE attacks, and shield allies by placing tankier characters in front of them to take their blows. Keep in mind the enemy AI will love to pounce on your positional mistakes, but feel free to return the favor as well.
Getting to know your party members, understanding their motives, and learning about their back story is something we really want to expand upon. Braven Arts will have a large and colorful cast of characters, full of interesting banter and unique personalities that you will meet and travel together with on your adventures.
Inspired by Suikoden Headquarters, we want to create a place where your teammates hang out and mingle as a community. Throughout the game, you will be able to recruit characters around the world that are willing to join your cause, each giving a perk such as access to new equipment. Expect to see some humor, unique character dialogue, and even participate in guild activities and mini games, as you see your teammates in a new set of lights.
Aside from all the fun, your Guild Hall is still... well...a Guild Hall. Players will be able to pick up side quests and send guild members on solo or group missions. Successful missions will net items, gold, and guild reputation. As reputation increases, more difficult jobs will be given, maybe even some from mysterious organizations...
Depending on who you have in your party at times, can prompt dialogue sequences, giving their opinion on the situation, or simply getting into a casual conversation with other party members, leading to potentially humorous, romantic, or tense dialogue available for you on the side.
You'll be able to see your party members ideologies, personalities, and motives clash as you learn more about them and their development throughout the story as they express what's on their mind in game.
Braven Arts takes place in Asteon, a vast world that reflects a growing age of technology, the ravages of magic, filled with secrets and shadows of the past, bringing a wide spectrum of environments for you to discover.
Explore 5 Major Continents - Travel through a massive overworld map as the story takes place over 5 major continents, each with unique cities, people, environments, and monsters to explore.
Secrets and side quests in every zone - What would an RPG be without side quests and secrets? Every area will have secrets and side quests to find delving into the lore of Asteon's past and present and giving unique rewards.
A Dynamic World - As the story progresses, major events will change the world around you. Major cities and people's activities will change in reaction to the world's situation.
Instead of having characters whose life purpose is to simply stand around waiting for you to talk to them, we want to make a world that is more active, a world that is constantly moving. Thus, we are implementing a Day and Night Schedule System.
Every character in the world will be moving from the time they wake up to the time to go to bed, going through their daily activities, creating an ever moving, changing world. As the day passes by, new characters and events will appear in areas, giving each zone various faces with a multitude of side quests and secrets for you to explore. What might be a bustling marketplace during the day, may have illegal black market and criminal activity rampant during the night.
Different monsters and optional bosses may also appear in areas during specific times throughout the day. Unique enemies will generally appear on the map as a warning of imminent death, or a welcome to a challenge with unique rewards. It would be ill advised to travel in certain areas of the game at night.
Magic once flourished in the lands of Asteon, commonplace to the creatures that embraced it. But power, always comes at a cost, as those hungry for magic, crazed over it and sought to seize it all for themselves. This conflict became known as the Primal War, which resulted in the disappearance of magical energies. It was gone, lost from the hands of the people, forever slumbering.
Centuries have passed since and suddenly these innate energies have awakened from their long rest. However, not all have been blessed with the gifts of its return and those that cannot wield it, quickly began to fear it.
Asteon is once again threatened by the flames of war, as the Remo Magi,a militant faction born from the fear of magic and bolstered with technology, move to constrain the advances of magic, believing the pursuit of its power will only lead to a violent and bloody end, a repeat of history. In defiance of this aggression are those that practice magic led by the guidance of the Arc Council, a group of governing mages who believe they can regulate the control of magic and use it to create further advancements in the world.
This has led to a deadlock between both factions, as the world is split on the battle between these two ideologies. As tensions rise, the sudden death of a Councilor Akasche, the eldest and most influential member of the Arc Council, fuels the conflict to its near limits as blame falls upon the most likely culprits, the Remo Magi.
You will take on the role of Graham Folvere, a leader of one of the last neutral guilds left in Asteon, as you are sent to investigate the death of the Councilman.
In a struggle for balance, in a story full of political intrigue and deception, forces must band together to fight back and discover the mysteries behind the events that beckon to tear the world apart and find stability within what can only be chaos.
Graham Folvere, also known as "Wind Binder", is a sarcastic and easy-going sell sword hailing from the secluded wind nation of Zaphria.
Once a mercenary that traveled around the world taking jobs, he settled his trade and co-founded a guild with Risa Vermilli a few years prior to the events of this story. He still often gets job requests from his past clients he met throughout his travels.
Graham specializes in swordsmanship, a common weapon among wind-users, but takes more of a reckless, erratic style of fighting, similar to brawling. He is also well known for his self-built mechanical arm specialized in the manipulation magic, able to be used both as an anti-magic device, as well as an amplifier for his wind magic.
When word of Councilor Akasche's death reaches Graham, he and Risa quickly move to investigate, fearing that someone is attempting to destroy what fragile peace is left in the world.
Risa Vermilli is an ex Remo Magi engineer, once known as the "Laughing Sister" a name well known throughout the world. She left the organization a few years ago for unknown reasons. Nowadays she likes to spend most of her time researching and engineering to her hearts content while working with Graham to expand the guild.
She is described to be a calm, calculative, and carefree, while ruthless and cruel at times. She is a romanticist at heart and loves to tinker around with new ideas and creations leading to her interest in engineering and, unlike other engineers, research in magic.
Despite being an illustrious individual in the world, she is quite the mysterious character. No one really knows much about her besides basic information; whether there isn't much to say, or whether she does a good job in covering her tracks is the question.
She primarily uses a handgun (personally customized for maximum efficiency) and M.E.G.A. (Multi-Engineering-Gear-Arsenal), her own creation specialized in quickly crafting and dispensing weaponry.
Aria Relyn, an arcanist well versed in the arts of magic, is the disciple of the recently deceased Councilor Akashe. Taught from a young age, and somewhat of a bookworm, she spends most of her free time reading through archives of books and scrolls of lost magics. Although often alone reading, don't be fooled, she can be quite hot headed when aggravated and won't shy away from a fight.
As an arcanist, she brings a wide arsenal of magical abilities, and has attuned herself with many elements. When situations are dire, she is able to tap into her arcane powers which give her a boost of magical energy, as well as an array of devastating abilities, at the cost of exhaustion afterwards.
While a valuable ally to Graham and the guild, being an arcanist and attuned with even the highest forms of magic, has put her on the Remo Magi's blacklist that watch her every move.

The history of Braven Arts is a bloody and dark one, full of war and death. Heroes that have fought to defend the world during the direst of times have their names inscribed in what is known as the "Memorial of the Fallen". Become forever immortalized in Braven Arts as you have your name and a 1-2 sentence description of your heroic feats on the monument, available for all players to see in game.
Release the beast within, by helping to develop a monster that you will encounter while traversing the lands of Braven Arts. You'll be working with us to design its visuals, abilities, and location of encounter. Will players get tired of getting wrecked by waves of your monster? Well too bad! They'll keep coming! Also you will be included in a special place in the credits for helping us design a monster.
A simple enemy not enough? Want to create an unstoppable abomination that terrorizes the countryside? How about a notorious assassin that hunts down anyone he sees fit, be it a crowned head or a lowly one. Well we can help! You'll work together with us to create a challenging optional boss; its design, attack pattern, lore, location, and (of course) its sweet, sweet loot. Together, I am confident we will be able to crush Graham and his guild! (Or at least make players throw a fit in frustration.)
Liven up Braven Arts by creating your very own NPC! You'll work with us to develop its design, location, daily schedule, and dialogue. Is this NPC an ordinary person living their daily life? Or do they have some secret identity when it comes to a different part of the day? You will also be included in a special place in the credits for helping us design an NPC.
If just a regular NPC isn't enough for you, design your own guild member! Characters recruitable for the guild will go much more in-depth as a recruitment process will delve into important aspects about the characters back story, situation, and personality. Together we will design the guild perks, his or her schedule before and after recruitment, the activities that they will partake in within the guild, and much more!
Envision yourself into Braven Arts by working with us to create your very own playable character! Work with us to create the class, design, banter, attributes, skill trees, back story, and much much more as you take hold of the wheel and make a major influence in the game. You will work with us to mold and develop your character to your fitting. There is a lot of content that must be created, so prepare to bring your heart and soul as you shape your perfect character!
We are two brothers, Paul and Kevin Kim, who have been playing video games for as long as we can remember. As a programmer (Paul, 23) and artist (Kevin, 20) duo, we have always dreamed about making our very own video game ever since we were kids, but we have never actually tried to until now.
One fateful day in late 2012, we got together and decided to turn that dream into a reality. We tinkered around with multiple small projects ultimately leading to the development of Braven Arts. Now we are finally able to show what we have been working on to the public.
Completing Braven Arts by the end of 2015 will take a lot of time and effort which ultimately costs money. Through Kickstarter, we will be able to alleviate these costs, allowing us to fully focus and work full time on the game while involving the community during the development process.
We also plan to purchase necessary hardware and software needed to help us finish the game, as well as business expenses such as licensing. There may also be unforeseen costs during development that we might not be able to predict at this time.
We will also need a budget for outside help such as a sound artist. As a coder + artist duo, we need to find someone who will work with us to create an amazing sound track that will liven up our game.
Aside from just the funds, we need you! Involvement on the forums and helping us test the game during the beta will help mature the game. While we progress through the development of the game, we don't want to separate ourselves from the community and want to listen to suggestions on what you think will make the game more fun. We are just two minds, and with many more we can mold this game into something really great!
The hardest part was getting the game rolling, and developing the skills to make the game work. A lot of the past year has been creating the foundations of the game, as a lot of the code necessary to run the game and all its features are nearly done. With that in place, we feel like whatever hurdles there are in the future we have the necessary skills to undertake them and when in doubt we will be sure to always listen to the community and incorporate you guys along the way. Through many polls and surveys as well as input from a good beta test run, we hope to work together with the community throughout the development of Braven Arts.
That said creating a full-fledged game, especially an RPG, means a lot of content that can take a lot of time to develop. Although we anticipate the game to be finished by late 2015, we can never know how long it will take to fully develop the game as there may be unknown issues that may pop up right around the corner. However this has been a dream of ours and you can be guaranteed that we will always have passion and determination, and never cut corners to give anything less than our best
The journey to get this Kickstarter out has been one that was a struggle, but a joy to us like none other. Through the hard times and the good times we will never stop dreaming and working, and hope that you can dream with us as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We've been getting this question a lot and for the initial funding goal we will be releasing it for PC, Mac, and Linux. However, if we exceed the goal we will have stretch goals for other platforms. That being said, even if we don't reach those stretch goals, we hope to expand to other platforms such as PS4, Xbox, Vita, 3DS, and others.
