Acclaimed artist Dan LuVisi is ready to take you on a twisted trip down memory lane. You know those popular culture characters you love so much from your favorite video games, TV shows, and movies? He’s reimagined them, putting them in an alternate and strangely satirical universe. After years of putting these images and their associated stories online, Dan is ready to present you with POPPED CULTURE, a book that collects some of his peculiar pop culture paintings, the stories that accompany them, and presents many new and unseen ones as well
Expect to be entertained, disturbed, and, yes, even moved by the world of POPPED CULTURE!
A small dose of some of the featured artwork from POPPED CULTURE!
POPPED CULTURE features 96 pages (upped from 64 pages thanks to the generosity of backers!) of Dan LuVisi's bizarrely skewed takes on popular culture in one eye-popping book. Some of the images contain short stories, explaining the disturbing and/or sometimes thoughtful backstories behind the characters. The book also includes some amazing work from several guest artists: Chase Conley, Jason Edmiston, Dave Wilkins, Richie Pope, Alex Konstad, Allison Smith, Sterling Hundley, and more!
There are two editions of the book to choose from:
Standard Edition: softcover
Kickstarter-Exclusive edition: hardcover, exclusive cover art, dust jacket, foil stamps on cover and spine of book (added thanks to the generosity of backers!), and a tip-in page with an exclusive Dan LuVisi print
WHO IS DAN LUVISI?
Dan LuVisi’s story as an artist began with what may be his very first memory: drawing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in a coloring book with his father. Before finding success, he suffered through his share of setbacks, including learning disabilities that had teachers telling his mom he’d be lucky to flip burgers for a living and difficulties making ends meet as an artist.
What drove Dan’s life and career in the early years were his unwavering love of drawing and his desire to share his creations with the world. After years of struggling, he found regular freelance work with companies such as DC Comics, which renewed his craving to make something original. Spurred on by friends and online fans, Dan created LMS: Killbook of a Bounty Hunter, his massive scrapbook-style book about Gabriel—a genetically engineered super-soldier who is framed by a extremist organization—and the people Gabriel targets in his quest for revenge. The book made a splash due to Dan’s bold artistic vision, leading to talk of many ancillary possibilities, such as merchandise and a film. LMS changed Dan’s idea of what he wanted to do with his art and he used its success to found Section 9, a company that provides a home for upcoming artists who want to create their own characters and worlds.
Perhaps more so than any of his works, Dan's POPPED CULTURE series struck a chord with people around the world. Now, Dan wants to reach out and connect with even more people through a book featuring the strange art and satirical stories of the series.
Dan LuVisi has a secret weapon: his dedicated followers. They are the ones who encourage him to build and share the unique worlds he creates in his art. The publication and subsequent success of LMS were completely dependent on fans wanting the book and pre-ordering copies back in 2009.
Having POPPED CULTURE on Kickstarter is a way to continue the connection between Dan and his fans. For the past couple years, many of his online followers have asked him to put together a POPPED CULTURE book. Now, finally, it's time.
Currently, Dan's about 85% finished with the art for POPPED CULTURE. By donating to the Kickstarter, you’ll make it possible for Dan to finish the art for the book and get it assembled and printed . . . and perhaps even add some cool extras! For your donations, you can get the book (in either the Standard or Kickstarter-Exclusive editions) and numerous awesome rewards, add-ons, and stretch goals.
For your pledges, you can receive the Standard Edition or Kickstarter-Exclusive Editions of the book, plus all kinds of great stuff, like a PDF of the book, a POPPED CULTURE T-shirt, an original Dan LuVisi sketch drawn inside the book, an original Dan LuVisi hand-drawn artwork, and even a Dan LuVisi digital work drawn according to YOUR specifications (you would own all rights to the work). Check out the list of rewards for all the details and options.
In addition to the items included in the various reward tiers, we are happy to provide additional items that you can purchase in any quantity you desire.
How to purchase add-ons: First, you must pledge to one of the reward tiers. After pledging, you click “Manage” on the Kickstarter page. You will then have the option to change your pledge amount (without changing you reward tier). Add an amount to your pledge that corresponds to the add-ons you want. For example, if you would like two signed posters (each of which is $20), you would increase your pledge by $40. This means that if you pledged to the $60 reward tier initially, your revised pledge—to get two copies of the signed poster add-on—would be $100.
We will have a Pledge Manager after the campaign to help you select which specific add-ons you would like for your increased pledge.

Risks and challenges
POPPED CULTURE is a book that has been in the works for years but, as with all such projects, there are certain risks that something totally unexpected could happen (especially in regards to printing and shipping) and the book could be delayed. In such an unlikely case, backers will be notified and given updates on the reasons for the delay.
For the $1,000 reward tier, Dan LuVisi will not draw anything that he finds morally offensive or obscene. Strange, bizarre, weird, and hilariously gross are okay though!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
