Tour of Sunset Press
I recently visited Sunset Press here in Austin, the packaging manufacturer I've selected for the campaign. David Bristow gave me a very informative tour of their facility, and I have to say I was tremendously impressed by their capabilities.
First, we looked at their printing line, composed of multimillion-dollar machines all perfectly tuned. David informed me that when they moved to this facility, they tore out the existing concrete floor and put in a continuous four foot thick slab just to make sure the machines never shifted out of alignment.
Next, we saw the die-cutting machine. Two giant steel platens push a steel-rule die against a backer that is temporarily adhered to the table. The die has sharp blades for cutting completely through the stock, and others with rounded edges for forming the score lines.
All along the tour I was reminded that printing is equal parts art form and precise science, and these guys certainly seem committed to their craft.
