We wil complete an exuberant and uplifting piece of public art, visible to thousands of New Yorkers who pass through this tunnel daily. Read more

About this project
In Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, there is a passageway that leads from Marlborough Road to Newkirk Plaza, where thousands of New Yorkers pass through daily on their way to the subway. For years, the tunnel was dirty, sad and neglected but thanks to the work of the Newkirk Cares Collaborative, a large mural and a small mosaic were added to the walls of the passageway this summer. The space is now brighter, happier and more beautiful than before but the work has not been completed. There is is still one stark, blank wall that needs help.
Phase 2 of the project will be driven by the mosaic work of Carlos Pinto of the Brooklyn Recycle Project and the painting of Susan Jaramillo, who created the mural on the opposite wall of the passageway. The new work will continue in theme of dreams from the first mural, this time focusing on uplifting imagery of flying machines.
Newkirk Cares is asking for donations to pay for mosaic materials like glue and cement, paint for the mural and for food to feed our volunteers. All of the mosaic materials such as ceramics and glass are recycled and are acquired at no cost.
Please help us with any donations and bring a permanent benefit to thousands of people in our community!
Thanks to this building's landlord for graciously donating the space for this improvement to happen.
Thanks to the Flatbush Development Corporation for their hard work in improving the passageway and Newkirk Plaza in general.

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge will raising our money, gathering materials and volunteers and completing the work before the weather becomes too cold for the cement to work properly. If we do fall behind, the backup plan is to finish work in the Spring.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
