I'm so glad you're taking the time to find out what's next from Kiara and Cultivated Films. I wrote Christmas Wedding Baby because I was seeing and working on all these intimate, darkly themed, tragic character dramas and I just wanted to enjoy film making again. There's a lot of stress in the independent struggle. The pressure to perform and succeed can take the wind right out of your sails. My mother finished reading one of my scripts and said to me "Paint Rainbows Baby, this doesn't sound like you." I (as usual) took her advice. I wanted to tell a fresh, fun story that audiences would enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed creating it. It's a film about what happens between people and not just to them. There's no, opus, no soapbox, no secret message, just a window into the lives of 3 fantastically complicated women and the men that try to adore them.
The film is a fast, funny, family focused, romantic adventure. Andrea is the youngest of three sisters, beautiful, young, intelligent and making her way in the world. She’s engaged to marry picture perfect Brent, when the passion storm of her life, Gabriel walks in to her pre-wedding photo shoot. Fiancé Brent is delayed on business giving Gabriel time to walk Andrea down love and lust lane. This leaves Andrea to question whether now is the time to move on, or to recapture the man that she loved so much and lost.
Vivid, relatable characters are the heart of this film. The Andrea’s sisters are in two very different places in their lives. After a stellar career in journalism, the oldest sister, Lori has chosen the path of single parenthood and is due with her first child, much to the chagrin of her family. The middle sister, Charlotte is at a crossroads with her long term boyfriend and father of her two children, Issac. Issac has finally stepped up and taken his role as the man of the house, but Charlotte is over trying to create the Norman Rockwell picture and wants the freedom to pursue her career potential before her youth is gone.
Visually, we will break the rules of the traditional romantic comedy. The wedding is set to take place in Jacksonville, Florida on Christmas day. This alignment creates an interesting visual concoction of flip flops on fake snow, and twinkling lights on palm trees that is not commonly seen in cinema. It is also a silent commentary about the visual perception of happiness. Moving beyond the traditional flat frames and bright lights of comedy, we will excite the viewer with our cinematography and create an unforgettable cinematic experience.
All of the money generated in this Kickstarter campaign goes directly in front of the camera. This film is my thesis project for my New York University Masters Degree in Film. As a student of this esteemed program, we have millions of dollars of state of the art equipment and post production facilities available to us for the development of our thesis films. My film has been developed under the guidance of acclaimed film professionals such as Milcho Manchevski, Sandi Sissel, Mick Caselle, Carol Dysinger, and Spike Lee.
We plan to shoot our film on location in Jacksonville, Fl where the Director grew up, to take advantage of the beautiful and varied landscapes that the city has to offer. From the sparkling St Johns river, to the pristine sands of Jax Beach, to the eclectic shops of 5 Points, to the hanging moss of Mandarin, we plan to make the City of Jacksonville a character in this film that helps shape and guide our story.
Risks and challenges
There are two things that independent film makers constantly struggle to find and expand: money and audience. I'm really hoping that this kickstarter campaign will help me with both. After we get the movie made we'll strive to get the film presented in festivals then hopefully distributed. It will help us tremendously to be able to show them the throngs of people that contributed to this campaign and liked us on facebook and follow our tweets. Beyond that, I;m just thrilled to be launching this project. I know the cast will be amazing and the crew top notch, The script is wonderful and the Director ain't bad either :> It's going to be an amazing adventure!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
