Yes, a very important question. Who are we? We are GeX, a new startup based in Carlow, Ireland (A small country off the Atlantic ocean, you know the best ocean in the world) where we are part of New Frontiers, an Enterprise Ireland initiate to get company's off the ground.
First off hello there! My name is Theo and I'm the proud-to-say CEO of Gex.
GeX is part of a long story which started in 2013 when I piloted one of Ireland's first Esports events in the capital of the country, Dublin. From there I became intimately more involved in the gaming industry and community. Around the same time, I began to play a lot of games and somehow (meaning somehow in a big way) I lost my blizzard account, which had a number of games bought on it including the saved progression in said games! This, along with a few other annoyances, gave birth to GeX.
Through the Esports events I was now annually hosting, along with a team that was formed through love of the same medium, the community started to come together, and there the early idea of GeX came about. A centralised gaming platform that connects all gaming programs, games and social media into one hub. Over the years more thought was put into the project and yet nothing was ever done about it.
In 2017 I found myself in the perfect place and time where I could now start to develop another idea for gamers - Esports TV, which was born in March 2017. This digital platform was a Web TV channel which would show Esports content online. This idea pivoted to having multiple channels and a social media platform added. Basically it was a gamer's Sky TV featuring a Facebook model all merged into one. After gaining acceptance on 'New Frontiers' though, I began to consider more about my original idea of the centralised gaming hub. It didn't take long before I decided to incorporate the two ideas together creating a solid business opportunity, being the first to truly unite all gamers online onto the one digital platform. A digital kingdom!
The million dollar (or euro) question. We are doing a Kickstarter for a number of reasons but its primarily to speed up the process of releasing the platform. Currently we have been funded a little bit of money, which is helping us design the entire platform from scratch. But for us to develop the platform even further, we require some funds to build it. We are also hoping that Kickstarter will offer us a perfect platform to get some exposure and promote GeX.
We are looking to raise €40,000 which will be used to pay developers in their creation of the minimal viable product, Gex. Breakdown: €30,000 will be used to pay developers for 3 months to produce the platform with €6,000 used as a buffer for extra development. The remaining €4,000 will be used to pay for Kickstarter rewards and fees.
If we raise more then the initial €40,000 in our Kickstarter, we will add stretch goals and milestones; developing more of the platform quicker and/or adding in other features that we were considering in year two (meaning even more to offer!).
GeX is a Centralised Gaming Platform that will have a number of unique and in-high-demand features, with the focus being for gamers. These are just some of the opportunities that the platform will offer:
- Web TV (up to 100 channels on esports, Games and everything geek).
- Social Media Platform (Connect your Facebook and Twitter into the ultimate meme dream steam train, or professional social hub, depending on your preferences).
- Fast-Food/Take Away, Event Tickets and Coaching Lessons can be bought on the platform.
- Large Marketplace that you can buy games, hardware or merchandise on (Like amazon!).
- Chat to friends in games on any platform.
- Find out your profile rank based on your gaming library and devices. Challenge your friends with mini-games.
- Capture moments on Streams and TV channels.
- Voice chat with friends, groups or lobby's while watching the channel.
- Keep track of your gaming performance, find out what games you are best at or where you need to work on your KDA.
- Keep a record of where all of your games are online (So you don't lose the accounts with them on it; it won't happen again!)
- Sweepstakes on weekly and monthly basis. More features to come too!
The platform on launch will be available on PC, Mac, IOS and Android. Some features will not be usable on mobile version but will have it's own unique take on some of those features. Initial Concepts
All of these concepts above are early write-ups which will be subject to redesign, ensuring the best experience possible for the user. Any feedback that we receive would be looked into and lovingly analysed. From there we would then implement the changes if we feel it positively impact everyone's experience. So what do we get out of it?
What we aim to do with GeX is make life much easier for gamers by providing one platform that can bring all of the gamer's online profiles and gaming accounts into one central location. Making it easier to find everything and keep tabs on all your accounts.
Say for instance I'm on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I also have a Steam, Origin and Blizzard account where I buy some of my games, but I also buy games off Kinguin, Humble Bundle and G2A when the delicious deals come in. To top it all off I occasionally use Amazon for hardware and the odd merchandise or two. Already from the sites above, I am using 10 different websites or platforms to get everything I need. How about using only 1? Right?
What we are looking to do by connecting the above accounts into the one platform, is providing you to monitor, buy/sell or even update your profile all from one location. At the end of the day, making life easier for one of the most amazing and active communities on the planet is the dream.
Not only that, but we will look to bring a community together that will drive the platform forward in terms of development. In the end, we are more interested in the community choosing how the platform goes forward than us forcing our idea to be the definite.
Important question! We will have two; Free Membership, and Elite Membership (paid version). There will be core features that both memberships will have access to, but naturally Elite Members will have access to much more.
The Elite Membership package will cost €3 a month, this price may vary depending on your country and region (but in or around the same ball park)
You either hate them or love them but many companies and platforms use them to generate revenue for their business. I do not want to be one of them at all and the platform will reflect this in how it is being designed, however there will be certain amount of ads for the free accounts.
Free membership accounts will see one advertisement spot on most pages, however it won't intrude on your experience AND will only be relevant to what you play or do on the platform, so it may even provide interest. There will never be any inappropriate advertisements and we will only show advertisements a certain number of times to the user. We want to make sure that you will only see something that a) you actually like and b) that might interest you.
If you have the Elite Membership you will no longer see advertisements in the form of banners. Done! You will see articles though occasionally that will have featured or sponsored tied into it. This could be for instance a headset review that is sponsored by the company that provided the headset for the program. BUT, this featured piece can be turned off. Yep! You can turn off the featured or sponsored article on the GeX Platform, so if you find that you are not interested in the articles that appear you can head to settings and turn it off. It's your choice. We keep them in to potentially provide valuable content for you, but if its not you're thing, get rid of it. Data
So by connecting a number of accounts together, we would be of course collecting a lot of personal and sensitive information in the process. We will be looking to enforce the highest level of data security for users to make sure that any information that is on the platform is kept safe. There will be NO selling of your information or your personal details (scary that it has to be said so direct but we guarantee user privacy). We will however look to use this information to improve services for you in the best way possible or show you relevant games or channels that you might like.
Your data will also be stored in a data centre nearest to your location. We are looking to do this in compliance with GDPR, which will be coming in on the 25th of May, 2018. We will also let you know of any future data changes that come into play.
To help protect your data we may suggest users to create stronger passwords, form double passwords (Password and pin), or introduce a double authentication. Your accounts, your choice. Our goal is to help users keep all information safe.
If you stuck around all the way to the end of this, woah thank you! We really appreciate any support you may like to give, and if this sounds like something you'd love to see happen, by all means support us and let's make it a reality!
Risks and challenges
There is many risks that GeX will face, and most of them will be financial. Due to the type of platform we are creating, we need to raise a large amount of capital to finish the platform. We are applying for a number of grants and programs that we are looking to pay for the development of the platform.
We are thankfully owned 100% independently by myself (Theo Goyvaerts) meaning that no other company has shares in it. The vision reached will be a from combination of myself, our hard working and passionate team, and you the community.
The biggest risk is that the Kickstarter will fail which will result in a delay for the platform to be finished.
Another risk will be if I do not secure further funding for the platform from Enterprise Ireland or any accelerator, though if we raise over €120,000 on Kickstarter we will be able to finish off the platform indefinitely. We are applying for the CSF (Competitive Start Fund) in January which is worth €50,000 (Paid in two installments of €25,000 over 6 months). If we get the CSF we will receive it in June 2018. I will also apply for the NDRC and Blackstone Launchpad, both offering €30,000 for either 8%/3% equity. This will occur in February when the incubators will be looking for new companies. We are also looking to apply for HSPU with a Venture Capital for €500,000 which can take from 9 months to 18 months to secure a finish. Ideally though, if we raised enough capital from Kickstarter, we can avoid going through all of this.
Once the minimal viable product is complete, we will be able to charge for the platform and create an income for further development though this will slow down the process of releasing the full platform.
In the case where we are only short of €10,000 to €30,000 for completion of the platform, I will be looking to secure loans from a Bank to finish it. I have already committed €7,500 of my own money to get this company up and going and will be looking to invest even more into it over the coming months.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
