We have designed and made a rubbish bin that catches floating rubbish, oil, fuel and detergent in the water of marinas.
What is the Seabin project?
We have designed and made an automated rubbish bin that catches floating rubbish, oil, fuel and detergents. It designed for floating docks in the water of marinas, private pontoons, inland waterways, residential lakes, harbours, water ways, ports and yacht clubs.
Can even be fitted to super yachts and motor yachts!
Right now we have a perfectly working prototype and we need the help of Kickstarter and supporters to set up a production of the Seabins to be built in the most sustainable and responsible way we can afford.
This Seabin we hope is the first of more future models directed at other specific locations
How can the Seabin help clean the worlds oceans starting with marinas?
We start close to the source of the problem in a controlled environment.
The marinas, ports and yacht clubs are the perfect place to start helping clean our oceans. There are no huge open ocean swells or storms inside the marinas, its a relatively controlled environment. The wind and currents are constantly moving the floating debris around in our oceans and in every port, marina or yacht club there is always some pollution heavy areas based on the predominant wind and current directions.
By working with these marinas , ports and yacht clubs we can locate the seabin in the perfect place and mother nature brings us the rubbish to catch it. Sure we cant catch everything right now but its a really positive start.
It’s a big mission, but it can be done. In fact, we’re doing it right now.
Great! how does it work?
The Seabin is situated at the waters surface and is plumbed into a shore based water pump on the dock. The water gets sucked into the Seabin bringing all floating debris and floating liquids into the Seabin. We catch all the floating debris inside the Seabin and the water then flows out through the bottom of the bin and up into the pump on the dock.
The water then flows through the pump where we have the option of installing an oil/water separator and clean water then flows back into the ocean. This process is constant, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Inside the Seabin we have a natural fiber “catch bag” which collects all the floating debris. When this is full or near to full, the marina worker simply changes the catch bag with another one. The collected debris is then disposed of responsibly, the catch bag cleaned and now it is ready to swap again for the full one in the still operating Seabin.
We have designed the size of the Seabin and catch bag for safe working load for one person to safely change the catch bag.
If the Seabin is full it still works. The flow of the water simply pulls all the surrounding floating debris against the Seabin and keeps it there. The marina worker would simply scoop up the surrounding debris and then change the catch bag as normal.
Wow, so simple! Why do we need Kickstarter and your help?
- We need to raise funds to bring our prototype into production. To build the Seabin with the most sustainable materials and processes we can afford.
- The more funds we can raise the better we can produce the Seabins.
- Kickstarter is an awesome marketing platform to show the world our project and create contacts worldwide.
- It’s a great way to get everyone involved in solving a common problem worldwide.
What are the goals for the Seabin Project?
- To help rid the oceans of plastics and pollution.
- To have a Seabin production in place by mid to end of 2016 and start shipping.
- To create Seabins from the most sustainable materials and processes available.
- To have the lowest carbon footprint possible in the production of the Seabins by means of alternative materials and processes. Also by reducing shipping and having the Seabins manufactured in the countries of installation.
- To create and support local economies with the production, maintenance and installation of the Seabins world wide.
- To have future models of Seabins for specific locations.
- To educate people and cultures about being more responsible with the use and disposal of plastics.
- To setup educational programs for students in schools.
- To convert our captured plastics into energy.
- To reuse or recycle our Seabins for other uses and or applications.
- To have pollution free oceans with no need for the Seabins.
That’s some great goals! Tell us about Seabin Pty Ltd and yourselves.
Rewards on offer need to be seen to believe!
Here is preview of the amazing items we are offering as rewards! The handwritten certificate, the super cool T shirts and the amazing prints. The photographers are all ocean lovers and extremely passionate about the environment. We at the Seabin project are deeply humbled to have such support from these talented photographers. We hope you love them and the other rewards also!
Look amazing in our awesome T shirts and feel amazing also knowing that we are supporting Clean Ocean Project by buying their T shirts and collaborating our art on them.

Risks and challenges
Q: What risks are we taking by helping clean our oceans?
A: For Seabin Pty Ltd, we are taking a lot of risks by investing our money for everything so far, the factory, building the prototype paying for the kickstarter video, websites, rewards you name it!
But we are soo happy to take these risks! because we are attempting to do something amazing. Helping clean our oceans
Risks for our supporters:
The rewards are a bit slow to reach you or gets lost in the post? Ok, let us know if this happens and we try to work something out, we are good guys!
We are aiming at production for mid to end of 2016 and we feel this is doable.
We will keep everyone up to date with the project developments through our website, facebook page and Instagram. Also electronic newsletters.
But really, for the supporters of the Seabin project there isnt much of a risk. Just the awareness alone created just by this campaign is a super positive.
Challenges... wow, where do we start..
How many challenges have we encountered and solved already through perseverance and sheer determination? Too many to count! The good thing though is that we’ve already nailed most of our problems.
The real challenge we have is funding. The more funds we can raise, the better and more sustainable The Seabin Project will be. We already have an amazing working prototype installed in Real Club Nautico in Palma Mallorca, so our next mission is to be able to produce Seabins in the most sustainable and responsible way possible. Imagine if we can one day create our seabins from our own captured plastics!
With the funds raised for the Seabin project we can afford to pay experts for some of the challenges ahead, for example "can we make the plumbing and water pump system more energy efficient" or "we can work with alternative power sources"
we need your help to spread the word and help us achieve our goal.
Whether the project is successful or not, we feel it’s a win-win. The awareness raised of the issue of plastics and pollution in our oceans will be a massive help, hopefully bringing about a much-needed change in our consumer culture.
A big thank you for checking out this campaign and to everyone who has helped us to make this dream into a reality!!!
