ThunderBridge stands for Portland, Oregon in the Circle of Regional Effigies that will surround the Burning Man in Black Rock City 2011 (Burning Man will be held on August 29 to September 5).
The design of the ThunderBridge is both rooted in Portland and symbolic of the Pacific Northwest. It is an arched climbable structure reminiscent of the St. John’s suspension bridge spanning the gap between the chaos of Black Rock City and the majesty of the Man. It is flanked by two thunderbirds facing opposite directions, each powerful as a storm, yet guarding the journey. As participants cross ThunderBridge their steps generate tremendous crashes analogous to the rumble of thunder and flashes of lightning.
The bridge is also a canvas for local artists to decorate the sides individually, at fundraising parties and during SOAK* 2011: Snarkle Pony Rodeo. For more information about Portland regional events, check out www.burningmanportland.com.
The Circle Of Regional Effigies (CORE) represents the progress of the Burning Man culture radiating outward from the main fire at our center, out into the larger world. Each effigy is created by a local community from within the Burning Man Regional Network.

* What does my Kickstarter donation go towards?
As you can imagine, it not only costs money for materials and supplies to make a large scale piece of art, but it costs money to transport it as well. This project is BIG and it is going to take a large truck and a lot of fuel to get it down to Black Rock City to Burn it. That is where your donation comes in. Your generous donation will help assist us with transportation costs, additional unforeseen costs and help fund our Fire Safety and Leave No Trace plans.
Put a bird on it, it’s art.
