The Desert River Bends is a short documentary following the alternative lifestyles of three middle-age river guides in Moab UT.
About the Film:
The Desert River Bends is a documentary short film about the lives of three middle-aged river guides. We want to capture their lives on and off of the river as they spend the summer of 2011. These guides take customers down river sections ranging from small family day floats to five-day trips down some of the biggest rapids in the country. As well as their unique job, we will explore their unique style of life in general. How did they get there? Where do they live? What does their daily life include? Is this a long-term sustainable career?
About the People:
The three guides, Isaac, Jay, and Dave all live in Moab, Utah and work as river guides during the summer. Each has come from a unique background and all have different stories of how they came to end up living in Moab. From mailmen, to painters, to welders, each has left their original job and home to live an alternative life in the desert.
Jay is the head-rafting supervisor at his company and has been a guide for over 6 years. Dave is a Cataract Canyon guide and has been guiding seasonally for the past 10 years. Isaac, the newcomer to the group, is going into his third summer rafting.
We look forward to turning the camera on some of the most interesting people we have ever met.
About the Place:
Our film will take place in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, ranging from deep river canyons, to mountain forests, to constricted slot canyons. We will have a heavy concentration on how the people interact with this environment. To capture this we will use a wide range of tools including professional HD camcorders, waterproof cameras, mountable helmet cams, high end digital SLR’s and aerial photography. In our opinion, beautiful cinematography is the only way to capture the true essence of this awe-inspiring desert.
About How it Will Work:
Two camera units will spend the end of May and the whole month of June documenting the three men and the people and places around them. We will utilize a small crew to be mobile and film these men in whatever extreme conditions they encounter.
