OUR MISSION: MAKE GAMES THAT GET KIDS PHYSICALLY ACTIVE

We want to improve the world by making mobile games that get people moving, energizing minds and bodies of all ages. To test our idea and prove it could work we built a fully-functioning demo for iOS. Try it FREE and please consider supporting its continued development including multiplayer functionality, health metrics, a significant cheat fix, and Android deployment.

 Have you ever spent so much time sitting--playing video games or staring at a phone--that you can feel your body turn to mush? Do you know people who spend so much time gaming they might as well stop fighting zombies and just BE zombies?  We know people like that. We also know a few parents exhausted by the continual stop-staring-at-your-phone-and-do-something-else battle with their kids (and sometimes with their spouses). Preaching doesn't help. Nagging doesn't help. Threatening doesn't help.

Then one day we had an idea.  "What if we could leverage mobile games to excite people about getting their bodies up and moving?" What if we could make gaming more active and fitness more fun? 

That would be great!  But--though we loved games and one of us had once worked for a major game publisher--we'd never made a game ourselves. So we researched. We tinkered. And we contemplated Kickstarter. But programmers kept telling us "I've never seen anything like this before" and we couldn't risk other people's money on an unproven idea, so we took the risk ourselves and built a fully-functional demo.

WHERE DOES OUR PROJECT STAND NOW?  

We're excited to report that, after investing a lot of our savings and more than a year of our lives, we did it!  We built the first level of Treasure Dash: Race for Lost Wonders, an action-packed, motion-driven mobile game that activates players' minds and bodies. 

The game is fully playable and has gotten us to the starting gate. Though it has a few flaws and is not yet the complete game we want to build, it's already gotten impressive reviews. For example App Advice reports: 

"In this vibrant game of treasure hunting and enemy slaying, you have no choice but to be immersed in the gameplay. You will travel the land in search of coins and fight off your foes along the way. You will explore the lively scenery seeking out secrets as you feel like you are part of the game … So, this is where the fun comes in … In order to move around in the game, you must bounce, which makes the character walk forward. To turn in the game, just turn your body. You do all of this while you are holding your device in front of you, so you really do feel part of the experience." 

Now we're asking for your support to help take this game to the next level by adding multiplayer, fixing an obvious way to cheat*, and engaging players on iOS and Android around the world to improve their health, wellness and happiness! To see its potential, try it yourself. Treasure Dash: Race for Lost Wonders is now available FREE on iTunes for iPhone 5 or later, and iPad 3 or later. * RE THE CHEAT: Yes, we know about it.  And yes, we have a plan to address it. While no game will be 100% cheatproof ("10-year-olds can hack anything," one 10-year-old told us), we are working on a fix. All that's missing is a bit more money but with your support we will get there soon.

A NEW WAY TO PLAY: MOVE YOUR BODY TO DRIVE THE ACTION

You've never played a game quite like this before. As you move your body in the real world, your character moves in the game. As you turn in real space, your view in the game world turns with you. It's the essence of virtual reality in a mobile game, which literally puts Virtual Reality in Your Pocket (TM). Take it with you and play anytime, anywhere.

As our playtesters can attest, Treasure Dash delivers a double shot of happiness: the emotional high of gaming plus the physical exhilaration--followed by a healthy exhaustion (parents, listen up!)--that only moving your body can bring!

 HOW YOUR CONTRIBUTION WILL HELP

We're seeking your support to help us turn our first level into a full game that's immensely replayable and universally accessible. We want to get players off the couch and engaged in physical activity everywhere. We believe this game has the potential to improve health and lifestyles for a huge number of people. Help us make that vision a reality!

Phase 1: Endless Variety with Multiplayer

If your support helps us reach our basic funding goal ($25,000) we will complete, polish, test and deploy robust multiplayer functionality so players with a strong wifi connection can play Treasure Dash: Race for Lost Wonders against anyone, anywhere in the world. 

We know this will work because we built rudimentary multiplayer functionality into an early prototype (you can see it working in our Kickstarter video). Finishing and deploying multiplayer is our top development priority because playing with (or against) friends and family generates endless variety and gives players so much joy they play longer and hesitate to put the game down. That will really improve health, wellness & happiness!  

Phase 2: Universal Availability with Android & AI 

If we reach our first stretch goal ($35,000) we will deploy and test a version of Treasure Dash: Race for Lost Wonders for Android.  This will help the game reach a greater audience, including a lot of techies, lower income families, and players around the world.  

We built our demo using an engine that can deploy to Android but for testing and reliability reasons we pushed it out on iOS first (the Android ecosystem encompasses so much variation that Android development can be tricky and give coders migranes). Nevertheless, with your support we are excited to build for Android!

Upon reaching this goal we will also build in basic AI (Artificial Intelligence) so people can choose to play against either human or machine players. This makes it playable anytime, day or night. Even if your friends are not online, you'll be able to enjoy Treasure Dash.

Phase 3: Build a Foundation for the Future

If we reach our second stretch goal ($50,000) we will deepen and extend the game experience via new levels, quests & achievements, new monsters, new heroes, new weapons, new power ups, new in-game dynamics ... 

We have big plans and with your ideas and support they'll be better than we could ever dream on our own. That's why some of our kickstarter rewards are all about creative collaboration. If you want to help us design a monster or hero or power up or weapon or landmark or sound or in-game challenge, you can! We'd love your insight and participation!

In the long term, we'd love to build on Treasure Dash to create a suite of games that get people excited about active gaming and healthy living. That's beyond the scope of this project but we welcome your support to help people everywhere have more fun and lead healthier lives!

Risks and challenges

On the road to launching this campaign, we have encountered our share of potholes, detours and delays in both programming and product design. The good news: we vowed from the beginning not to launch on Kickstarter until we had something that worked. If you can read this message, that means we've overcome all of our critical challenges so far and have produced and tested a playable demo level of our first game. Which (did we mention this?) is available FREE NOW on the iTunes app store! (http://apple.co/1E4ZCaN)

The future risks we see are additional project delays caused by unforeseen programming complexities. Android deployment can be challenging because of the sheer number of devices, operating system versions and wireless carriers, so we will choose carefully and tread cautiously there. We have chosen a programming team with deep experience in Android so with luck we will have smooth sailing.

In addition, it is possible that some of the new in-game mechanics we want to add to the game could cost more than anticipated. We intend to be flexible in executing those so we can build a great, engaging game and remain within budget. Having said that, we have done our best to diligently cost out all desired additions, and we believe these risks to be mitigated to the extent possible.

Other background for those who are interested: we met as MBA students at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and have built experience in strategy, operations and finance. One of us has experience working in a major video game publishing company. This adventure has expanded our experience and taught us much. We look forward to hearing and learning more from all of you.
